Engine oil
What oil and what viscosity are good for the LT-5?
I heard amsoil is good but you really can't get it at the local Auto zone.. How about the Mobil-1 brands? |

Re: Engine oil
Mobil 1 high mileage in 10w30 here. I can buy it anywhere in the proper weight and Marc says it has enough zddp.

Re: Engine oil
I mix 3 qts of Amsoil Z-Rod to 5 or 6 qts of Mobil1 that I get in jugs at Walmart. The additive package in the Z-Rod is overkill for our application, but I roughly figured out that my blend approximates the additives available in 1990's vintage oil. One 12 quart case of the Amsoil will last for 4 oil changes (3-4 years for me). I also choose to blend because it is a little pricey to run Amsoil.

And I know Amsoil is the correct oil just because.......actually because Marc says so Engine Oil Technical Information I like to "treat" my LT5s with the best But then again....I am one to replace liners if I find a minor scratch or imperfection Amsoil AMO ZDDP specifications: Phosphorus 1265 ppm Zinc 1378 ppm Recommended for the LT5 engine. Also for other engines with high tension valve springs.

Re: Engine oil
The 5 quart jugs at Walmart come out about $5 a quart. ($24-$26 usually)
I buy more than one to minimize trips to witness the human circus. I also stock up on oil filters. |

Re: Engine oil
I use CastrolGTX 10W-40 Diesel. It has the necessary amount of zinc and phosphorous needed. And I have been using it for nearly 4 years on re-ground cams. Lobes look new. Get it in the 5qt jugs.
