Starter Motor Harness Connector
I decided to replace my starter since the current one seems to operate inconsistently. It'll start but then it won't. SOmetimes if I turn the key it takes a moment and s=then starter engages. I bought a rebuilt off eBay.
In the process of installing I noticed that the connection at the harness is "different". The one on the original is completely enclosed while the rebuilt shows the internal connector. I'm not sure that the harness will fit. Anyone with experience on this? |

Re: Starter Motor Harness Connector
Yes.
Is the rebuild a Bosch? I had the same problem. I ended up getting an AC Delco rebuilt and it had the right connector. On the "correct" connector, it's a square with the connector blade inside and a tit on the top. On the Bosch it was a square with a wider blade inside, and what I can only describe as a "ricer spoiler" on top as the retention mechanism. As far as I know, the starter was the same from 1990 to 1995, so I don't understand why one came with the wrong connector.

Bob,
That seems to describe it pretty well. Did GM use different connectors? How the heck can this be an issue unless these starters were used elsewhere? |

Re: Starter Motor Harness Connector
I didn't understand why it would be an issue either. My GM part list shows the same part # for 90-95 Z's.
Was yours a Bosch? Or was it the wrong thing from GM or AC?

The motor I took out was an AC-Delco. Made in Japan. Harness is stock. In looking at the original, I wonder if the motor contact is corroded to the point that it may be the problem. Otherwise the motor looks pretty recent. When I first did the P&P, I discovered a green puddle of water under the starter. Its been dry since. Also the boot covering the connector was also pretty ratty. Don't know how to get a new one or replace without undoing crimped connection. I called the place I bought it from today and the guy was like " Oh do you need the larger receptacle?" DUH! What the hell are you advertising a ZR-1 starter if you don't know? Supposed to be shipping out the new one today and paying for shipping of other one back to them. Last edited by XfireZ51; 09-08-2009 at 05:04 PM. |
