? about after the trans is removed (weight of engine resting to rear)
Okay, today I finally dropped the ZF-6 in preparation to remove the engine next weekend. I could not find information anywhere, but I placed a short 2 X 4 flat across the oil pan on the floor jack to prevent all the weight and full tilt to the rear after the trans was removed. It would seem if only motor mount holding the motor it would be bad to leave it hanging.
Is it safe to also jack up the rear of the engine to level off for removing other items on the engine? Just wondering since the oil pan is aluminum and a lot of weight to support. As mentioned in other posts, this trans one heavy sucker and although I managed by myself, it would have been better to have help. I know there is no way I would attempt this going back in by myself and will do the alignment trick with cut off heads on a set of bolts as suggested by Jerry. Thanks, |

Craig, if you are going to leave it dangling for an extended period of time, support it. A floor jack works fine at the back edge of the trans. I use hockey pucks as my lifting pads.

Thanks Jeff. I did not take off the fuel lines before taking out the trans so now I have to jack the block back up level so I can get to them. As always you're willing to share your experience and I appreciate it.

If you end up with it there for a while I also use a jackstand under the oil pan to keep it up, but it really wont hurt much with it tilted back but you'll want it level if your using the lifting brackets for the LT5 the fire wall will get in the way of the rear one.

Craig,
I'll loan you a set of GM lifting brackets & bolts if you want. I just need them back so I can have some made and they are the only ones I have. You can leave the bellhousing on until you get the engine out. Jerry
