Thanks bud. You are right...the fill is 17mm. However, the drain looks as if it is a 16mm. 17mm HEX drive slightly larger. Go figure!!

OK. I will try again. But it is strange that the 17mm drive seats with no problem in the fill plug, but seems slightly over size for the drain plug. Maybe a slight grinding on the drive surfaces will make it seat in. Don't want to damage plug. If worse case, will just extract oil from fill and refill. thanks for all the help. What I am doing is installing a RON DAVIS radiator. C4's are notorious for over heating. GM should be ashamed of themselves to put that small of a radiator in the ZR-1. Ron Davis rad is 5/8 inch thicker and is all aluminum. Very nice radiator. The only mods I did was lowering it 1 inch, 3:73 rearend (Dick Gulstrand), Corsa exhaust and a modified EPROM. Programed out the power key, 1st to 4th and changed the spark and a K&N filter with the top of the air box cut out.
Thanks again. Marshall 1991 ZR-1, Black/Black. (1400) |

Or somebody has been jumping curbs and garfed up the drain plug.

I only hit curbing at the track. Damn lucky it didn't crack the pan when I spun.

Flyin Ryan, you are right. After looking at this plug for several minutes and running my finger around the lip, I suspected that the drain plug was damaged. I used my dremel very so lightly around the edges and inside of the plug, and kept fitting the 1/2 17mm hex drive into the plug. Finally it went in. After removing and inspected, I found that the plug had been damaged by some AH using improper tool or tools and had peened the edges over enough to disallow a 17mm to fit. I knew that a 17mm was needed to remove the fill and drain plugs, that's what threw me when I couldn't get the 17mm in the drain plug. At my angel it was difficult to get a straight on view.
Anyway, thank you all that commented. Marshall |
