USA STUNS Spain 2-0!!!
Spain is ranked the #1 team in the world and had not lost in 35 matches having won 15. No other national side had even scored on Spain in the last 430 some odd minutes. That is until the 27th minute of the Confederations Cup semi-final today pitting the USA v Spain in South Africa. What a game the US played! They took advantage of very fast counters and speed, which is a hallmark of USA teams. Shooters they're not. The defense was incredible with Tim Howard playing GK and stopping everything. Finally, the USA demonstrated the capability and athleticism it really has. And they did it on the world stage in a very important international tournament. The USA represents CONCACAF which is the futbol confederation for North and Central America and the Caribbean. Typically considered a "creampuff" confederation by the Europeans and S. Americans. The USA and Mexico dominate this region. Next match on Sunday likely to be against the "samba boys" Brazil. Wouldn't that be something especially after Brazil kicked our arse last week 3-0. Many of those people were and still are Americans. Perhaps they will begin to appreciate "The Beautiful Game" soon. Against Brazil the USA must show that they can play with consistency so that they maybe taken seriously. |

Re: US STUNS Spain 2-0!!!
I have noticed ESPN is showing a lot more soccer highlights than ever before. It is almost like they are trying to promote it here in the USA. Personally I cannot stand the European hobby and never will. The only time I even force myself to watch it is during the championship game of the world cup. Even then I find myself wanting to switch the channel. I just find it too boring and effeminate to watch.

Re: US STUNS Spain 2-0!!!
Jim,
Sorry you feel that way. If you watch top flight football, there's nothing "effeminate" about it. Even if you're watching the Women's National Team. Those players are out there playing a pretty rough contact sport and with no pads or helmets. Perhaps you confuse elegance with effeminate. IMO, there is no other sports venue that comes close to an international match like the one that was played yesterday. I would highly recommend going to see an international game and take in the atmosphere you have when the US plays Mexico, England, or Brazil. Go with someone who understands the game. There is simply nothing like it! |

Re: US STUNS Spain 2-0!!!
I played soccer for the Artillery Army team for about two years. Nearly kicked my *** as a midfielder I was ALWAYS on the move, thank goodness I wasnt a striker. Ive seen more broken and torn limbs than I can remember during that time period. I think the efeminate label is from the drama queen Europeans who lay on the pitch in pretend agony waiting on the call to go there way. Way to go USA

Re: US STUNS Spain 2-0!!!
What I find effeminate is how the players act like they have sustained a career ending injury and some cry like little girls.
In reality they seem to be faking the injury in an effort to get a penalty called on the opposing player. After that, they typically spring right back into action. I also find it very boring. So while I mean no personal offense to anyone who likes it, I cannot get into it myself. As to seeing it live, maybe there is something to what you said. I remember being neutral about hockey and only watching the Stanly Cup when I was younger. However when I went to see a game in person, it changed my perspective on it. These guys were much bigger and faster than I could have imagined just watching it on TV. Now I try to catch several games a year, and follow it on TV more often. |
