Default Paging the pros: ZR-1 Rear end gear changes

Looks like many of us are considering rear gear changes during the winter. Can anyone give us recommendations on parts ( not ratios ) that seem to work best in our Dana's ? Seems like more than ring and pinion is usually involved. Should we stay with Dana HD stuff and not aftermarket parts ? Viper gears are mentioned a lot; are they quiet and are they compatible ? Lots of questions. Thanks for input.

I thought Viper Gears were actually Dana parts...

I am using Yuon gears in my Dana 44 in my 89 with no issues, as long as the person setting them up know his stuff you should get no whine. Don't forget the Speedo correction gears too.

I have bought a set of 3.73 and 4.10 from this place.. the 4.10 is stil in my 89

OF course you want to buy quality parts, I used Randys ring and pinion.
Advisable to change the bearings too.
The set up is the important part!

If you want to stay with an OEM ring and pinion gear set from Dana your best bet is to go with the Viper gears from an online Mopar parts house like
http://www.mopardiscountparts.com (till end of Feb. you can use coupon code 100 for an extra 5% off)
or try your local Dodge dealer.
P5007043 is the Mopar part number for the 4.10 ratio ring and pinion set.
List price is $319 but with typical discount you should be able get them for around $250 to $265 which is not that much more than a set of aftermarket gears from someone like Yukon.
You should also replace all the bearings and seals while your at it.
Ratech 3012K Deluxe Installation Kit for the 84-96 Corvette Dana 44 Axle comes complete and also includes the side yoke bearings and seals. It sells for $112 plus shipping which is a pretty good deal.
http://ratech.stores.yahoo.net/coax84d44.html
Be sure you tell them that the pinion height is set by shimming the rear pinion bearing on the pinion shaft and not by shimming the bearing cup in the housing like is done on the Viper Dana 44. Otherwise they will send you the larger diameter rear pinion bearing cup shims.
You should find a good shop to do the work if you are not experienced and don't have the necessary special tools. The Corvette Dana 44 is nothing special as far as the expertise needed to properly set one up. Any competent automotive rear axle shop should be able to handle it.
