2020 Tire Choices

Gonna need a new set of tires come spring, so I figured I?d better start planning now. What are the hot recommendations now? What?s best avoided?

Nittos are working out well for me... Car is smooth all the time... Ive cruised for several miles at 100+ mph on up to 135 and the car is very smooth... I think allot has to do with who is doing the balancing and how well they do it. Road Force balance is a must on all tires imho.

Another thing people dont take into account is rotor balance. I had issues on a few Vettes and this one too... I was running to driled/slotted rotors and vibrations were always there until I removed them and re reinstalled the oem rotors... no more vibrations. I imagine a very high quality rotor wouldnt have those issues... but my last name isnt Gates...

Same thing for wheels... junk Chinese wheels often have balancing issues. I fought that fight a few times only to go back to the oem wheels. Problems solved.

The exact same tech balanced my Nittos and later Michelins, using the exact same machine.

In addition to the Nittos not being able to hold their balance, right from the get go each of them took a couple of pretty massive weights to balance, while the Michelins took very small weights and for one tire, no weights at all.

It's great that the Nittos work for you and I am by no means questioning your experience, as many others on many forums have also reported success. But I think it is pretty inescapable that they have a wider quality tolerance than the Michelins, as there are several (including myself) who simply could not get the Nittos to work.

The phenomenon of wider quality tolerance is probably the same issue as with the "junk Chinese wheels", BTW.

Seems like some runs of the tires might have that wider tolerance... but many seem to be tighter. Maybe those of us with no issues just got lucky.

FWIW:
I put Nitto NT555G2s on my E39 (5 series) Dinan BMW.
Took very little weight when road force balanced
Very smooth at hi-way++ speeds, reasonable $
Considering them for the Z when the time comes...

Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 275's and 335's on original 17 wheels. They are much better the the Goodyears.

I haven't seen much mention of Mickey Thompson Street Comps, available in the stock sizes. I put a set on my ZR-1 when I got it, replacing the 20 year old tires it came with.

I'm pleased with them. They hook up well and drive nicely.

I believe the speed rating is R, which means 106 mph. Sustained speeds above that is not recommended.
