oil preferences
How many are running regular top grade oil vs. synthetic?? What are the reasons we flip over synthetics? Does switching from one to another present a problem especially on higher mileage cars, when you are not sure what previous owners may have used and how often?
As the cars are traded around and add the dealer owned cars, who can be sure what schedule and product was used?? What is the best non synthetic oil to use? Just a concern and light poll to rest any fears. Please respond with any thoughts!! |

Re: oil preferences
Short Question.....Long Answer Quote:
This is not to say that you should not use fossil based products as there are many high quality products out there. Considering the high frequency of oil/filter change most car nuts do, either type of oil will do the job. If you decide to use fossil oil, at least change it more often. The general consensus, as I see it, is: fossil (hydrocarbon) based oil for initial break-in of new engines with 2~3 changes during first 1,000 miles then switch to synthetic. Procedure is beleived to seat piston rings better than synthetics, as well as saving a few bucks on those initial changes. Quote:

Maintenance is not confined to just oil & filter. Don't overlook coolant, and brake fluid. It's a good idea to follow the recommended procedure to flush & replace fluids in both systems. Check the clutch master & slave cylinders while you're at it. Happy wrenching!

Re: oil preferences
My thoughts on this are based upon one over riding issue. Cold starts or just initial start up wear. Ya know the beast has been waiting to go out & play and ya jump in & light it up and the oil is cold. The syn oil seems to be better on start up wear protection. I don't know for sure if the evidence is overwhelming on the side of syn oil?
Next is what's going on before the oil gets to it's proper operating temp. To me this is even more important. In most owner's manuals there is a bit about how until the oil comes up to temp don't put too much load on the motor. In our manuals it says to be below 2k rpm's until oil temp is at 140*. This is where syn oils excell. There is overwhelming evidence here that they are just better at lubricating at low oil temps than any dino oil. Also as a bonus they are more stabil at high oil temps so they do a better lube job at that end of the temp scale too. JMHO Tom

Re: oil preferences
Just went to redline 10w30. Don't know which did it but the chain tensioner rattle is a lot quieter and maybe even gone at times, even before the pressure builds up, also went to the new style bosch filter with the visible spring bypass valve in the far end of the filter(with about 12 hours between engine starts). But the chain is quieter even before the oil pressure is there, so I'm giving the oil
