Default Air Filter Lid

Sort of been boring lately. So, I ordered a open filter lid from Eckler's only to find out it was a flimsy, cheap looking ABS plastic version - returned it of course!
Instead, I ordered a used OEM piece, chopped it up and painted it.

Ready to be installed.

You butcher!

Check the plastic air filter housing that connects to the coupler. I’ve had several seams along the sides split open allow dirt and crap to bypass the filter. Path of least resistance!

Thanks for the tip! I will check for sure.
While playing with it, I was pondering on mounting the filter on the flip side of the air box, cut a rectangular hole on the radiator shroud apron and drop in the assembly. This will allow the filter housing to suck the air when it enters the radiator intake area above the front air dam.
What do you think?

My thoughts are if that was a good idea, then GM would have designed it that way to add performance. Located with the radiator and oil cooler, the filter would be subject to road debris. On top of the radiator shroud, it is protected by that plastic deflector in the nose. Just my opinion.

I would think a flipped filter could be a water issue.

If you would like to help reduce intake air temp place a piece of Reflectix
( bubble warp ) between the air box and radiator shroud. Cut the piece a little smaller then the air box so you wont see it. It will help reduce radiant heat transfer to the air box.Take car for a ride and then check temp with a infrared thermometer at the radiator shroud, then check temp on the air box. You should see about a 15+ deg temp drop.
