Default TPMS Sensors

I have always thought that the giant and ancient design TPMS sensors on our cars was a problem and possibly an accident waiting to happen. I had my wheels refinished last week and happened to be at the wheel shop when they dismounted the tires. What came out was a bit shocking. Mind you my car has 180k miles, so this could be considered extreme testing. Only one sensor was intact. Two had separated from the band and had been tumbling around in there. This was apparent by their beat up look. The fourth was in pieces. Interestingly other than an out of balance feel from the tires I never felt anything. With that mileage who knows how many times tires have been replaced and what if any care was taken by the tire shops. Still 28 year old plastic and in this case high miles do not make for a happy combination.

In my personal opinion unless the car is an NCRS vehicle I would remove the sensors or have a second set of wheels for regular driving.

Here’s a view of one of the pieces that came out.

Wow! I'll be changing out tires before my 1/2 mile racing later this year. All 4 of mine are still working.. I think! Will certainly inspect them when the tires are off the wheels..

With the speeds that you will be seeing during a 1/2 mile run, it would be best to not just inspect, but remove them altogether.
This has been discussed in other posts.
I have removed many fragmented c-4 sensors.
If one of these lets loose, at high speed, you will have your hands full dealing with the imbalance created by such a rotating mass.
At 25, no concern.
At 50, still just a nuisance.
At 75, a bit of a problem.
Over 125?
Why risk it?
