Default Thermostats Issue

Ok... this is getting frustrating. Take a look at the photo below. The thermostat on the left is what came out of the car and is correct. Note the brass piece on the bottom with the two cut outs.

The middle one is an AC/Delco that came from RockAuto. Note the bottom piece, in this case steel and no cutouts. To my knowledge not correct.

On the left, also from RockAuto, is a Gates brand. Note the bottom cup shaped piece. Also not correct. This is the second one like this is have received like this, the previous one in a Stant box marked 14068. I should also add the Gates listing on RockAuto showed a photo of the correct thermostat like the one on the left. What I got looks nothing like it.

Does anyone know if the AC/Delco shown is usable? Does anyone have a source for a correct thermostat? (that doesn’t cost stupid money)

Looking at the one that came out it’s apparent that it’s not the at old. I say that because someone drilled a 1/8th hole, per Jerry’s writeup, in the top plate, indicating a relatively recent replacement. I may just check it for proper opening and put it back in.

On a side note when I opened the thermostat housing on the new (to me) engine I found an L98 thermostat.

You can get the Stant 180 deg Thermostat 14068 from Marc Haibeck.

I am trying These guys just because...… Stant 14068 Thermostat

Do not use the two on the right and there is no need for the 1/8 inch hole in the flange. If you test the thermostat on the left it should open a bit before 180 deg F and be fully open at bit over 180 deg F.
I would just use the Stant 14068 on the left if it opens at around 180 deg F as the 1/8 inch hole will not have much effect on function of the thermostat and that thermostat looks almost new.

You saw what I got when I ordered a Stant 14068, good luck.

I don’t see anything listed on Marc’s site that he is selling thermostats.

Text Message Marc and I think he will sell you the correct 180 deg F Stant 14068.

But...…..

Hans,

I’m using correct thermo from Jerry’s but w 2 holes drilled. Works fine so I wouldn’t sweat the hole in the thermo. And yes u want a 180* thermo for Closed Loop.

The hole is not an issue. I used two holes drilled out on the last car. It worked well for the hot California climate where I lived at the time. I just want to be able to order and receive the correct thermostat. I’ll give Marc a call today. In the mean time I’m putting the correct one I have back in, May even add a second hole.

I believe I got mine from Jerry's a year ago. I never drilled any holes, and never have had any issues since install.

Hans,

I may have one of my previous ones before I installed the Fluidyne rad.
