Many prefer to have their existing one rebuilt.
It is child's play for the many shops that do them, and this way you know you will end up with the correct pulley, fan, etc.
Save some bucks as well, but that is minor compared to not having to remove a replacement because it is incorrect.
Good luck, and let us know how you make out!

I second finding a shop to rebuild your original.

Remove it and send it to Jerry’s Gaskets for a complete rebuild, instead of a part fix, which is the norm “rebuild” by most vendors.

Thank you for the referral. We do not actually "do" rebuilds. We offer "Remy" (formerly Delco Remy and formerly a GM company) rebuilt alternators.

We also buy original alternator cores. We are saving them up for the day that we have to start rebuilding them ourselves. Hopefully that day never comes:-)

The Remy rebuilds are complete rebuilds, no partials.

Remy rebuilds typically come with a slightly undersized pulley.. If you prefer to change out the pulleys before sending in your old rebuildable core, that's OK with us. Just make sure you transfer all of the spacers, in order, along with the pulley & put the removed pulley onto the core alternator.

We have a job order in que with a machine shop to make new ZR-1 specific alternator pulleys.

I take mine to a place that does large truck alternators. They are more consistent than the rather fly by night consumer automotive rebuild places.

We do the same, and spork is correct, far more consistent!.
Rarely ever a problem.

I chose to have mine rebuilt. Did not have to worry about wrong amperage and wrong pulley. Our z's have a larger diameter pulley.

Rockauto has a Delco for less that $100.00. I got one about a month ago, and it's working fine so far. Correct pulley, plug and play.
Now I can get the original rebuilt anytime, and have a spare.
