Default Service ASR trouble

My bone stock 1992 ZR-1 started stumbling badly after only going about a mile while out for a ride on a recent cool fall morning. At the same time as the stumbling developed the Service ASR light turned on and the Security light in the lower left corner of the instrument cluster started flashing slowly. The car would surge and then cutout, it even stalled a couple of times. I shut the car off and restarted and the problem went away; same thing the next day but this time the problem did not go away. I pulled the codes and here is what I had:
1. CCM code H41
2. ECM code H51
3. ASR code H72
(These were obtained using the ECM ALDL plug from Gordon)

A couple of interesting notes:
1. I always turn off the ASR
2. It does not set a code until the car moves for a couple of minutes

From the manual it appears that I will need a Tech1 and a universal break-out box to trouble shoot the problem any further.

Any advice? PCM? ECM? Bad cable? Other things?

Thanks,
Tim

Cool Re: Service ASR trouble

my car had issue's when i first got it...and stumbled and sometimes even
died at a stop sign...at first i thought it was allergic to them..

but later i found, my map hose was soft..and collapsing and my accordian
was also ..closing upon itself..under acceleration..
and the air filter was very
dirty...check these things..for a hopefully easy fix..after that
yell here for Mr. wizard..this group is sure to help you find the problem

Thanks for the reply. The map hose looks good and doesn't collapse when it revs up and it idles fine until the Service ASR code is tripped, then it runs weird, idles high and then stalls.

Thanks,
Tim

How old is the battery?
Have you tried cleaning the battery terminals?
If it's not putting out 12V, all kinds of problems can surface.

The ECM 51 indicates that there's a problem with the PROM.
The CCM 41 indicates problems with serial data from the ECM.
The ASR 72 I believe also indicates problems with serial data from the ECM.

This is pointing to the ECM as the culprit.
This is not especially good news, as the ECM's are rather difficult to find.
I replaced mine last month because of a fuel injector problem and was luckily able to order one directly from my local Chevy dealer. Since then, it appears that GM has run out of stock.

Good luck!

The battery is 3 years old but has a battery tender on it nearly all of the time and the battery appears to be fine, it cranks fast and has never run down.

I think I will ohm the connections from the PCM to the ECM to see if there is an issue there. I think I can find an ECM and they are relatively inexpensive compared to the PCM, it is $750.

My 92 had similar problems:

On mine it turned out it was the ECM was bad.

Mine had the security light flashing, SES light on, Speedo went out, service ASR light on and no power key.

I could not get the SES light to flash trouble codes though.

I believe that a 1992 LT-1 should have the same ECM with a different PROM, can anyone confirm that? If so I have friend with a 92 LT-1 that I could swap with.

They have a diferent service number and I think they are completely different.

Thats why I am having a hard time locating a ECM.

I agree.
The box looks similar, but the insides are totally different.
Won't work on a Z.

Sorry!
