Default Loose Steering Wheel

I have a loose steering wheel, probably from the previous driver using to get out of the car. I had a 69 El Camino with a tilt wheel that had the same problem. There were two little bolts down deep in the column that had loosened. It wasn't to terrible to fix, but it didn't have an air bag. I haven't looked in the service manual yet, is there anything to watch out for?

This is for a '92, but I would imagine it is similar. Post what you find out, I also need to do mine in the future. It's not too bad now, but has about 1/4" play.

That's a great link. I plan on doing this and cleaning a lot over the winter.
Thanks

The general consensus on the column wobbling seems to be that getting in and out of the car by using the steering wheel for leverage is what causes this. I was thinking about that the other day and I tested that theory by getting out of the car. Lo and behold, you grab the upper left side of the wheel, not the upper right side. I kinda figured after doing that, that the wear is normal and common to these tilt columns.

According to Marc Haibeck, that is exactly correct, the more the tilt is used the more the housing wears out.

Marc has a bushing fix for this problem. $50.00 will get you the bushing. Seems spendy, but it is far cheaper than dealing with trying to get a good column. I would think that if you have a competent person (and you better) working on the column they would be able to install it with no problem.
