So my son in-law and I left Atlanta Ga Sunday at 10pm for the trip to Marc's in Chicago. had a great drive up Matt had never driven a ZR-1 before and was permagrin all the way. car ran great averaged just over 26mpg running 73 to 80 all the way just over 12hrs.

Had one scare about 3am just past bowling Green I was passing a semi black road just as i crested a hill road gator on its edge stretched out from the center of my lane to just over the right side emergency lane and it had a guard rail, no real time to react sounded like it took the whole right side off!!!
Well pulled over and all it got was the right air dam and only pulled it lose and cracked the inner fender. Blessed the Corvette Gods and headed on. The rest of the trip was great. Got to Marc's about 10am. he had 2 red 90s 2 blacks 1 from Texas and a turquoise talked with his son for about an hour. Now if I can just make thru the 6 to 8 week wait....

I've probably driven a million miles all told. Only times (twice) I hit a road gator was in the ZR-1.

Yep that's a road gator..Guard rail (steel rails along the road) was on the right around the columns of the bridge on my right semi in left lane. So I could not go right or left just had to take it head on and at 80mph in the dark not much time to react. it would be nice if they would outlaw truck recaps they cause a untold amount of damage to other traffic.

I think I have driven over 750K miles in corvette's and this was my second hit first was a deer totaled a nice 68 coupe. Hit many in the millions of miles I have driven in other vehicles.

Those Gators will definitely do some damage! I have a bunch of cracks in the nosepiece on my little daily driver from one about half the size of the one in the pic... City freeway traffic - lots o gators and many times nowhere to go to miss em....
And those aren't all recaps either. I used to drive trucks and have seen non-recaps do the same thing. Big bang, lots o dust, and cars scattering like bugs behind you...

Guess they could be Guard to guard you from going over or guide to guide you back on the road after you hit one......

Sometimes they just send you airborn.
