Default Record Run Anniversary

Where were you on March 1-2, 1990?

On the eve of the 22nd anniversary of the ZR-1's record setting run by Tommy Morrison, John Heinricy and others I tend to think a little about what it must have meant to have been there and be a part of that great event in the history of our cars. If you haven't read Hib Halverson's article you can click HERE. Thanks, Hib, for not only being there but documenting the event for the rest of us to read about and enjoy.

As a native born Texan I almost always lift a cold one on March 2 (Texas declared independence on that day in 1836 to become the Republic of Texas) ... but now that I own/drive a 90 ZR-1, I usually have a cold one in each hand to celebrate two great events.

If you don't already know about this be sure to read Hib's article. If you know even more about it, share your thoughts & memories for the rest of us to read. And try to remember where you were on Mar 1-2, 1990.

Well George let me think. In 1990 I was 20 years old living on my own in a one bedroom apartment in California busting my butt 10 hours a day making $7.50 an hour in a machine shop. I was broke as hell. I had a couch that I pulled out of a dumpster. A milk crate to set my little TV on. Survival was on my mind. A ZR-1 was nowhere in my future at that time. But 17 years later things changed. And at 37 I bought one. It was only after I owned one that I learned about the records. They are just a neat bad azz car.

Holy Cow! So was I, but I was making $6.50 under the table. San Diego was/is expensive so I didn't have a couch.

I spent the the first couple of days in March actually driving out here with a car load full of clothes. I turned 21 a month later. A year later my old man came up on his business venture and bought a ZR-1.

Damn! Your dad must have been making more than minimum wage to cut a check to a dealer for $60k. You must have been the envy of all your buddies. I couldn't even fathom that back then. But can't complain to much. I did have a 1990 GSXR1100 that would do 0-60mph in 2.0 seconds and top out at 176mph. And the chicks loved cruising around with me sticking their rear out for all to see. Lol.
