Skip Shift
I'm about to have my 1990 Z undergo the PV (Performance Verification) at the NCRS Texas Regional inthis month. Part of the procedure is to check the operation of the skip-shift feature. I had a Haibeck chip in it, which I've removed for judging, so fans and all will finction correctly. It doe snot appear, though that the skip-dhift is funtioning. I had the car in for service at a local Corvette shop here in Dallas and asked them to check to see if there was a bypass harness (skip-shift defeat cable) and they said there was not. Either they did not check it or something else is going on.
Two questions: 1. Where would the cable be located? 2. Is there anything else that would disable this function? Thanks in advance Jim |

Re: Skip Shift
See if the stock wiring connector is plugged in on the side of the transmission.

Re: Skip Shift
Not 100%, but I think the skip shift light on the instrument will light up when it is trying to skip shift whether the plug is plugged into the transmission or not. So if it's not illuminating, it has been programmed out, or broke. Mines been programmed out, so I can't verify this, but if I'm remembering right, mine did light up when the stock chip was in, also with it unplugged from the trans.

Re: Skip Shift
It does have the stock chip. It did have a Haibeck chip in it, which made the car run much better, but it turns the fans on at a lower temperature, along with some other things

Re: Skip Shift
I have a stock 1990 zr-1. I want to disconnect the skip shift feature. I know that if i unplug the wire to the tranny, it will accomplish this....however, what is the purpose of the mentioned skip shift cable and does it do anything special? Any suggestions as to use the special cable or not. Please help.
thanks, soslow (mike) |

Re: Skip Shift
While you're at it, make sure your rear hatch goes all the way up by itself, they'll gig you for this.
I've been told you can use aftermarket/replacement "rams" for the PV, check your own sources 1st on this... The stock ones, even new usually don't push it all the way open, the aftermarket ones almost rip it off the car solving the problem! I've had 2 new C-4s and neither one opened all the way by themselves even when new, and of course my current Z doesn't go all the way up either. Also spray a little WD40 on the latches of the storage bins behind the seats, they like to see them latch when "dropped" from about 6-8 inches, pushing them down to latch is a no no. Be very familiar on how to operate all of the controls, stereo, AC etc. Good luck with the CD player and seat bladders... |
