Hi To All....
My 92 is never going to be a concours winner but l want to give her a new paint job .... looks as though it may have been re sprayed before l got it but l cant be sure what type of paint system has been used....but if l assume (without tests yet) that the type of paint used was the same as or compatible with the original manufacturers then what type of paint can l use 'on top' of it.....sorry to the purists in advance but lm not planning on stripping it to gelcoat...there are one or two cracks and chips but the existing paint is generally solid and if it had been sprayed before it looks like it was done to gelcoat at that time as l can see overspray or different coulor layers so overcoating is the way lm going so....polyurethane, acrylic ?......its comp yellow |

Just be sure to use a good epoxy primer sealer like PPG to seal the paint or you will regret it. I will be painting my front bumper the same way in the next couple weeks with PPG paint. If you're not going to do yours before that I can let you know how it works out, but it sould be fine when you seal it properly. Paint is going to cost a small fortune to do the whole car, I paid $250 just for a pint of bright red paint with no reducer and a quart of clear with catalyst Tuesday, I already had the primer and catalyst for that. I really don't want to paint it but the original owner left bugs on it too long and they etched the clearcoat bad.

a buddy who restores old mercedes for a living is going to repaint my 90 for me is going to use aircraft paint and clear to redo my car. he says that the aircraft clear expands and contracts better in the weather and that the aircraft clear resists chipping better . its not cheap but he thinks it will last alot longer on a corvette

what it does is expand and contract with the body better .resists paint cracking and resists chipping from road debris better

Who is shooting the paint?
Most painters have their favorite paint. Most are now switching to water based paints as well. My last paint job was with Sherwin Williams.

Im in UK ....and my son is going to do the job....hes been in pro paint shop work training for a couple of years now and in the last 6 months has started spraying and produced some really nice work....but only on steel bodied cars....this will be his first GRP so lm double checking on making sure he uses the right products
doubly happy my son is doing it though....he has wanted to do it ever since he got into the paint game....so it wont just be any paint job.....it will be my sons paint job |

Sounds to me like your going to be using a water born paint based on the fact that your in the uk.
Now it really doesnt matter what paint was painted on the car what needs to be determined is if it is a good base for the new paint or if it needs to be all stripped off and started new. There is no gel coat on our corvettes.
