Default Half Shafts Rusty - What can be used to remove rust?

Hello,

I received the CR1 on Tuesday night. To say that I am happy is an understatement. I spent the better part of the evening detailing every part of the car. Didn't go to bed until 1AM.

Now I need some advice and recommendations. When I had the CR1 on the lift I noticed that the half shafts are rusty. When I pass my hand or rag over them the rust is powdery. Wha t can I use to remove the rust to get them back to silver? Also, what are they made of steel or aluminum. The rest of the car shows no rust. On my 95 they always remained rustfree. I'm just surprised that the Half shafts are in this condition.

Your help is appreciated.
Regards,
Ben

I think only early 90s had steel half-shafts... sand or clean with scotch brite and paint them with cast or steel gray.

Mine is #203 so I guess they are made of steel. I will buy some scotch brite today and get to work.

Thanks
Ben

My #608 1990 half shafts are in the same shape, really bad. Can you remove the half shafts without having to drop the entire rear suspension?
Thanks
Rich

Girlfriend (#792) has aluminum half shafts.
Also has eerie cryptic markings on them:

MY90 #622 was the switch over from steel to aluminum. My #566 has steel... I just lightly sanded to knock off rust a bit and then sprayed clear coat... they be what they be... rusty looking steel
