Default VOLTAGE

Guys what does your guage read when driving, Is 14.2-6 the norm?
Reason, I ask is my Delco pos battery went south yeaterday. It was put in in 1999. Guess it was tired.

Default Re: VOLTAGE

No #'s on my 90's gauge but it is usually more than 1/2 way up. If I let it sleep for more than a couple of weeks it reads a bit higher for a while. I guess that's because the bat is way low from sitting as it takes a good long drive to be back to the 1/2 way mark.

I think that our cars are power hoggs and even a batt that might start a LT1/4/98 will not be enough to start ours. I've seen other posts that say a Z will not start with a marginal battery...too much load/demand @ start-up. I think it might be prudent to get a decent battery and just chuck it at regular intervals say three to four yrs regardless of it's condition...it might leave you stranded if it gets to the point it can't hold a full charge.

Only other way I see working is to use a "float charger" like they use in boats. It will monitor the batt's condition and only charge if batt is low. Once full charge is gained back it actually shuts off and goes back to the monitor mode. That way you don't boil off the electrolite. I was going to go look at the local boat supply store & see whats ava. I had a neat unit in my runabout that was made by Guest Marine, 30 amp, handeled two batts and it was a float type. Worked like a charm. It kept my two interstate batts alive for like seven yrs at top condition. You know in a boat ya can't get out & walk if ya have a problem.
