1992 zr1 Transmission Problem
Help! I just removed the transmission from my 1992 and found 3 of the mounting tabs totally broken off. only 2 were holding the transmission.
I live in Minnesota, and will either need to replace the front case, split the case and have the tabs welded or replace the transmission. OUCH! I would welcome any advice as to this problem. Does anyone know a local qualified repair shop, I am trying to avoid the high cost of shipping? Also noted the the C channel that connects the xmission to the differential appears to have a slight bend and one set of the Xs in the side and buckled outward, I assume this beam should be straight and square? How is the urathane kit used at the xmission and differential, and what is the purpose of this urathane? Any help is greatly appreciated, this is my first time doing this repair. Re: 1992 zr1 Transmission Problem
Call Bill Boudreau the ZF6 Doc:
http://www.zfdoc.com/ (602) 319-6575 You've got serious issues that need to be dealt with. The C Beam being buckled is a big red sign that something drastic has happened to your drivetrain. Drop me a PM if you decide to replace the ZF6, I've got a list of contacts that I put together when I went looking for my replacement ZF6. TomC

Re: 1992 zr1 Transmission Problem
Jerry, Welcome to the forum. Good to see another MN ZR-1. Have you talked to the people at DRM? I'm sure that Doug Rippie can help with your needs and he is fairly close to you. The people listed in the previous posts are very, very good. But they are a long ways from us. Let us know what happens. Give me a shout if you need any help.

Re: 1992 zr1 Transmission Problem
Jerry,
I've got a '91 that has had 3 of the tabs welded similar to the repair you mention you might be "needing"! I might get "ridiculed to death here" but I'd consider this possible fix if you had no transmission issues. Does the transmission have any internal problems presently? If not I'd consider just "jigging" it to a bell-housing and have it welded like mine is. If you've got transmission issues then it pretty much is a cut and dried issue, get a case and have it built. I believe I'd buy a case and have "YOUR" transmission built rather than buying another transmission unless you have major issues. Maybe DRM could head you toward a builder closer than the "recommended"! They might even have an "arrangement" with Rockland Standard Gear" who is the only recognized vendor of S6-40 parts. George there builds a very good transmission. I would guess he's still the lead builder and likely does all the ZF S6-40. I have transmissions but I'd sure recommend the build of yours if it 's the original! I'd buy another "known good" c-beam and do the install again and check it "ALL"! My car I believe took a ride maybe through the field rather than around it. Maybe yours was either the "leader" or maybe the "follower"!! -Dave |

Re: 1992 zr1 Transmission Problem
with that much HP and torq, chances are the c beam got lose and allowed the transmission to move and bent the c beam.
did you notice the shifter going up and down? c beams are ez to find, I would send the tranny to bill and see if he can weld it up for you if the internals are still good. put some c beam plates on it going back in.
