My oil temp gauge never gets above the first small line after 100*
How would I check to see if its the gauge or sensor? I really don't think the oil cooler is THAT good. |

The analog gauges in a C4 ZR1 are not linear so they are pretty useless when you want to know the exact reading.
Some of the later cars can display oil temp on the digital display. If your car can do that check the digital reading. The other possibility is a failed oil temperature sender.

I would think a digital oven/meat thermometer with a long enough lead (that usually) has a small braided lead long enough to match the length of the dipstick. Any such thermo I've seen/used are digital too.
There may be a discrepancy between the probes and the temperatures measured for the dash and the dipstick area. But, considering one's ability to accurately determine the reading on the analog (dash) meter, my guess would be the two should be/compare reasonably close (especially if the engine is/has been running long enough to be fully warmed up). YMMV! |

RPMs make the oil temp increase. Run it in 3rd gear for a while at interstate speeds and it will go up. On track the oil temp is a bit less than the water temp. Normal street driving will not show a significant increase.
