Default 378 "mini stroker" vs. 391+ Big bore sleeved build.

I'm trying to get an idea of where I would like to take my 90 when the time comes to start more engine mods. Car is currently fully ported headers and exhaust. Anyone have any opinions or insights on our current "budget" options for increasing displacement?

Graham Behan or Marc Haibeck are the top of any list. Graham is closest to you.

There is no "budget" path to larger displacement, but the 390 is the least expensive option for up to 600hp.

I use the term budget loosely, but compared to a stroker crank they aren't as painful.

I was in your shoes last year. Already had a fully ported 350 and felt the need for more power. I was kind of surprised that the price of a stroker bottom end hadn't gone up that much in the last 20 years. The major issue now is time. It took 8 months to get the crank made. I decided to have a 4-bolt 415 short block built, which cut the car's down time drastically.

It really depends on how much power ur looking for. If u added a set of Pete?s cams to a fully ported stock block, u should be in the 540chp. Very nice street car.
That?s my current build.
If I was going to do a bigger bore motor, a closed deck would be my choice for the added rigidity and stability of the cylinder barrels. I love the idea of a 427 of which there are two I know of. Magic numbers to my ears. And we have several examples of a 391 which uses a stock crank.

Marc Haibeck is about to deliver a 415 to a customer. His prices (and a description of what each stage consists of plus some pluses and minuses for each), are posted on his website so there is no confusion. www.zr1specialist.com. A true expert at this. --Bob

Budget to go over budget!

Marc can build whatever you can pay for.

I was in your position about a year or two ago and thought to myself "what if I take the offset grind crankshaft in the 378 and use it in a 391?"

And wah-lah the first LT5 401 cubic in is now roaming the streets.

Either way a 378, 391 368 or even a built 350 will all be a bunch of fun!
