New Owner - 1993 ZR-1 40th Anniversary - ZR-1 Net Registry Forums

Just bought a 1993 ZR-1 - had it looked over and it is in good condition with 26k miles. However, I am having one problem - I can not get it to go into Reverse - used reverse when I picked it up and drove it home 3 hours no issues. Parked in garage and then this morning I could not get it to engage into Reserve. Appreciate recommendations and help!

Congrats on the new ZR-1! With the reverse lock out, does it feel like the plunger has some resistance to it? If not, chances are the tiny Allen set screw that fastens the plastic lock out plunger to the lockout rod may have stripped. Outside of that, the next step would be taking the trim console off and removing the rubber boot to have a look at the linkage with a flashlight to investigate.

Outside of that, the next step would be removing the linkage from the vehicle to R&R.

Grats, Along with what is posted above, Are you having any issues getting it into any forward gears? If so you may want to check the clutch master cylinder fluid.

Great point. It?s hard to truly see the level of clutch fluid just peaking from the side. You can grab the front driver wheel and rock the car a little bit and you may see the level moving in the reservoir, confirming there is actual fluid. A problem that can happen involves the original clutch fluid getting blakc and staining the inside of the reservoir, creating a fake level when it is really empty. I had this issue. Troubles shifting, reverse chattered and was not happy with me trying to shift into it. But I had fluid in it, right? I had the level showing full, but when I went through the trouble to access the reservoir to look inside, bone dry. What little was left in the slave cylinder was black as coffee.

Check it again, make sure you are doing it right, it takes a bit to get used to at first.
Are you picking up the lockout ring? Does it raise up when you try it? Are you putting the shift lever all the way over to the right and then back to the rear?
Or can you do that and it will just not engage reverse?

Thanks for all the advice - turns out it was just driver in training issues - i was not pulling up the plunger each time! I will get it all figured out - but did have a great morning drive today and loved my new ride.

Glad you figured it out and my advice helped. It's usually the simplest rather than the most exotic solution when something simple like that fails. It gets easier each time you drive it and you gain familiarity with the quirks of this car. Enjoy the ride!
