Default Not an lt5, but an lt4 question.

I know it's a zr1 forum, but being it's a trans issue, I assume it's the same or similar.

Boss acquired a white 96 lt4 last fall and wants to sell it this spring. It's got 72k miles and runs great. After coming out of winter storage it's making a whiirrrrr-ing noise when the clutch is out. Shifts fine and I can't feel anything goofy, but it's a concerning noise. Drove it around the block to see if it just needed to get the fluids up and around but to no avail. Thoughts?

Throwout bearing or pilot bearing?

Agreed, and if you go in for one you might as well replace the other at the same time. These ZF S6-40 transmissions are really tough. Doubt there is anything else going on.

And if you install the bushing type bearing, make absolutely sure that they do not grease it during installation. It will make the sintered bronze bushing fail at around 5-10% of it's expected life.

Agree completely with all earlier comments.
Also recommend changing tranny oil with Castrol synthetic 10w60 engine oil.

Does the sound change when you're in neutral vs any gear?

When it's in gear and you're moving it doesn't make that noise it's just when you're stopped and in neutral

Again, I believe it’s pilot bushing or throw out bearing. I experienced the same about 10 years ago.

That's a good sign. If it was making noise all the time, except with the clutch pressed in, I would be more concerned. I've hand much more serious issues that first appeared to be throw out bearings. (ironically on an LT4)

Suggest cheapest thing first and check fluid level and quality as others have said... If it was working fine when parked, and no leaks, there could be oxidation somewhere that froze something. Next, the trans comes out and you'll know quickly as others have suggested. +1 on the Bronze bushing. My $.02 Good luck!

Mine has done this after installing a single mass flywheel and Centerforce Clutch
