Brakes
The ol yellow car needs new pads and I might as well get some rotors while I'm in there. Are they the same as the base model?

The brakes are J55 spec. Larger than standard. However J55 was available on the standard car as well. Replacement rotors and pads are not hard to get if your staying with the stock setup.

I've been very happy with the Hawk HPS pads: less brake peddle force and smooth braking.
Although essentially a performance STREET pad, they have proven very good for spirited driving in the twisted roads of 4 mountain run events. The HPS BRAKE PADS do dust some, but it washes right off and the smooth, grippy performance is well worth a little dusting. I just bought my second set after the 4th 3-day mountain run event. Far as rotors go, as long as they are not severely grooved or tapered, likely they will be fine. No need for exotic brake hardware until you race it on a track.

As stated the J55 HD braking system was standard on every ZR-1 and I believe became standard on the base model however not until 1994

Given that the ZR-1 is heavier and quite a bit more powerful, do people run xp12/xp10? And yes, the HPS are very nice street/autocross pads. I prefer carbotech street pads but you can't go wrong either way--I've used both and the difference is minimal. But even one lap on a road course and you'll likely have a mess on your hands.

I've always tracked stock calipers with high-quality pads and good high temp fluid (Ate Blue, or whatever it is called now) and been fine---but as I said before this is a much heavier car than what I'm used to.
