No Start Resolution
It appears that no start issues are one of the most recurring questions from members both new and longtime, and even non members.
While there are a wealth of threads both here and on the Corvette Forum, that cover this issue, the search can take you to dozens of threads going back years. While I did not perform an extensive search of the stickies, I did not see one that starts at the beginning and progresses all of the way through the process. Specifically: No Crank 1-Battery Condtion 2-Battery Connections 3-VATS / and Key 4-Anti theft sequence requirements 5-Neutral / Clutch safety Switch 6-Ignition Circuit 7-Starter That should get it cranking Next should be an outline of a crank but no start diagnosis. Cranks / No Start Now I have always used the FSM, but some of us, myself included, might find it more helpful to hear one of our members explain the procedure in knowledgeable layman's terms as opposed to "manual tech speak". Having both is an ideal way to pursue a solution. Finding literally dozens of threads, many with new entries to old threads just seems to support such an effort. The answers are all there, but I find myself going from thread to thread to find the one pearl hidden somewhere. And if it is already here somewhere, we may need to make it easier to find. Good point Marty, but I’m not sure we can make it much easier than Cliffs (Dynomite) “Solutions” sticky thread at the top of the Tech Section.
With all the new owners recently the issue of finding technical solutions is popping up more and more. I’m going out on a limb here but I suspect it’s a sign of the times. People today want to simply go on the Internet, ask a question, and get an answer. There’s nothing wrong with that, I do it all the time. However in this case we are dealing with 1980’s technology. You cant hook it up to a computer and have it tell you what’s wrong. These cars are old school and they require old school diagnostic techniques. It’s a time consuming process. Through this forum we are able the shortcut that to some degree, Cliffs “Solutions” thread is a good example. In the end, to me at least, it’s a function of people’s expectations. 28 year old cars will have problems, even if they were fine yesterday. You simply can’t buy one, even with ultra low miles and expect it to be like a new car where it’s a care free experience. And when problems happen you can’t expect a quick and easy answer. As we all know these care are unique in many ways. Unfortunately one of those is the repair experience. In my opinion if you own one or want to buy one you need to be prepared to deal with that in one of two ways. Have some technical ability yourself, learn, research, participate on this forum and do the work yourself. Or.... get your checkbook (or today your debit card) out and pay one the (very) few shops around the country to do the work. If your not prepared for one of these 2 options you may want to find some other car as hobby. H
