Re: gearbox oil
You should be able to find the BMW oil I indicated... Works very well in my '91.

Re: gearbox oil
Technically rear axle gear lubricant should not be used in the ZF S6-40. The synchronizer rings are a phosphor bronze alloy. The EP additive in hypoid gear oil attacks the phosphor bronze material. This is why GM used a Texaco motor oil with some additives deleted for the GM transmission lubricant. The ZF service publication specifies that Castrol motor oil can be used.
I have never heard of a problem from running gear lubricant in the 6S-40. However, since specialized manual transmission lubricants are available from Amsoil and Red Line, it's best to use these high quality products. |

Re: gearbox oil
What weights of the Amsoil and Red Line do you recommend for our transmissions?

Re: gearbox oil
The Amsoil MTFQT product is 5W-30 just like the GM lubricant was.
Red Line recommends 10W-30 motor oil SKU 11304. I believe that 10W-30 viscosity is good for 20 degrees ambient and up. |
