Seems like I remember seeing somewhere that the removable tops (painted & clear) were marked with the vehicle serial number. If this is true, where on the tops would it be?
I've got both tops & have not located one on either. Of course, I could be remembering wrong on this. Hate those senior moments !! ![]() |

If I remember correctly, only the acrylic tops have the serial number. It is stamped into the front header.

Good memory! Exactly correct on both counts, although I have often found the painted top with masking tape on the header with the last digits of the serial number written on it. Marty |

I've always heard that not all clear tops have the VIN etched on them?
Mine doesn't, but then again, I bought mine NOS from a guy on the Corvette Forum... |

Thanks for the input guys.
I found the correct serial number on the left header of the glass top. The painted top is on the car so I didn't check it. From what everyone says it will probably not have one. Thanks again. |

Just to chime in, there was no serial number on my 95's painted top. The '95 was originally a two top car, but when I bought it in 2012 it had a Lexan transparent top that clearly was not factory and had no serial number. It was delaminating so I got a replacement at Melrose Corvette Tops that was factory polycarbonate but the frame had no serial number. They said that often people would get a factory replacement from a dealer but the replacements did not have serial numbers; only the ones that originally came with the cars had them. And Melrose would not add a serial number, pointing out that it is illegal to alter (or add) a serial number to any car or car part. --Bob

On the topic of the tops, I also have a 2 top car, and both still remain with the car. My question is; has anyone had issues with the paint quality of the painted top in comparison to the cars paint job? My top has lived in a padded case 99% if it’s life and the paint quality is terrible. Dull spots, orange peel etc...
Just wondering if this is common? Sent from my iPhone using ZR-1 Net Registry |

I just finished polishing the car including the painted top. I noticed that the top did not seem to have as thick a coat of clear as the remainder of the vehicle. I didn't really notice any difference in the amount of orange peel. We should keep in mind that we are working with 25 plus year old paint, and the finish was not "world class" to begin with. ![]() |
