Default ZF 6 Tailstock (Speedo Cover) leak 1992 ZR1

Having an ongoing issue with the tailstock housing leaking tranny fluid where the slip yoke slides onto the tranny. Tranny oil is leaking onto exhaust while driving and drips onto ground after the drive.

as a recommendation from Bill (ZFDoc) rebalance driveshaft and put black lithium grease into double lip seal. Was done by the service dealer and sent out to a special shop to balance. Dealer installed new aftermarket seal in tailstock (speedo cover) and installed 10W60 oil. Leaks worse now.

Back to the dealer and they said the vent tube to the tranny was plugged, they fixed that and suggested to install a factory GM seal into the tailstock. Leaks the same as after the first seal replacement.

Initial leak was less than the two repairs.

Car has original tranny, driveshaft, etc. and less than 8000 miles.

Dealer and myself at a loss where to go next.

Wonder if this has happened to anyone and any suggestions?

Thanks

Was the tailstock bushing for driveshaft yoke replaced?

C-beam bolts being overtightened can distort bushing roundness & cause excessive bushing wear. Excessive wear translates into seal leakage.

Dealer did replace bushing, said it was tight.

What's an aftermarket part number for the bushing?

Where are the C-beam bolts?

Thanks Jerry!

The C-beam has 4 bolts; 2 at each end; two passing through the tail stock, and two anchor at the differential.

IMO, a set of Bill Boudreau's C-beam plates are worth every cent, far as removing and re-installing the C-beam and getting it properly centered.

Positioning the tail shaft in the 'tunnel':

We found a good used driveshaft with slip yoke and the leak is fixed.

Now to send the 7300 mile original shaft and yoke to Bill .....

Please let us know what Bill finds wrong with your yoke. Very unusual to have a problem with a yoke, especially at 7300 miles.

Glad to hear you isolated the problem.
