Do not recomend DIYS unless you have the expirence and special tools required.
Best bet is find a good local shop that does rear end work. Here is the parts list you will need: - Mopar Viper 4.10 gear set PN P 5007043 http://www.moparonlineperformance.co...p/p5007043.htm - Haibeck 4.10 Speedo gears http://www.zr1specialist.com/HAT%20W...on%20Gears.htm - Mobil 1 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lubricant (2 qts) http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/m...w573/7070039-P - 1 x GM posi additive PN 88900330 at your local Chevy dealer parts counter - Corvette Dana 44 rebuilt kit http://www.justdifferentials.com/MKD...kd44hd-vet.htm - Right Stuff gasket maker http://www.permatex.com/products-2/p...t-maker-detail

You can save some money by removing and reinstalling the rear end with the bat wing and letting the shop just do the gear set swap and set up.

If you can R&R the differential from the car, I think you can get it completely done for about $1000-$1200, parts and gear setup

Anyone want to swap a 3:73 rear for my 4:10 Viper gear rear ? The 3:73 must have a Viper gear.

Years back when I was into motorcycling I had some high powered bikes...Gsx-r 1100-ZX-12 etc......One time I went up a tooth in the rear sprocket...It made acceleration better but I always felt like I wanted another gear on the highway....Of course rpm was up, but that was installed on a five speed bike...
If I decide to do 4:10s I'm guessing since the ZR-1 has a sixth gear I won't notice it as much |

Unless your car is a daily driver or, on the other end of the spectrum, a dedicated drag car, then neither highway mileage nor any of this talk about trap speeds and shift points will really matter to you in the real world. What you're likely seeking from your ZR-1 is a noticeable gain in acceleration and drivability. In this regard, the "bang for the buck" you'll realize from anything LESS than 4.10s is not good. If you're mechanically inclined enough to do the swap in your garage in an afternoon, then maybe, but not if you're paying a good shop $1500 to do it for you. Just my opinion. Good luck with your choice. |

I have to agree with Chris on all points, OEM gearing to a 3:73 or 4.10 gearing to 3.73 are not cost/effort effective gear swaps, unless there is another reason the rearend has to come apart.
Having personally dropped from a 3.08 gear to a 4.10 both on a 27" 325 series tire, going from a 9.42:1 1st gear final ratio down to a lower 12.54:1 1st gear final ratio. After a short break-in and cool down, the 1st time I hammered down, I must say I was disappointed. I was expecting some fishtailing Dukes of Hazard craziness, but was met with improved straightline acceleration. The most impressive aspect of the gear change was the improved highway performance. There was a hilled section of the 401 that I would cruise at 70mph. With the 3.08's with the cruise control engaged, the accelerator would be automatically depressed noticeable during while climbing this grade, with the 4.10's, during the same hill, the accelerator barely moved. Gear swaps and their effect on driveability is HIGHLY subjective, opines will vary. |

Due to the taller tires for the Z06 wheels, I thought I would try 3.73s to bring back the overall ratio close to the stock 3.45s. Its close with the GPS registering a speed of 3-4mph higher than the digital speedo. So it appears "as if" I still have a somewhat taller gear than the stock 3.45s. That's why I have been contemplating a gear set in the 3.90-4.10 range.
