I remember when these hit the floors in 70-71. I thought they were ugly then and I think they are ugly now. However, they are cool collector cars!!

The Plymouth Superbird was the last of the "Aero" cars.
The 1st "aero" car was the 1969 Dodge Charger "500". Aimed at NASCAR racing, the "500" deleted the Charger R/T's drag inducing gaping front grill and replaced it with a more aerodynamic gront grill from the Coronet. The rear window recess created lift, so the deck lid was redesigned to be a flush mount. The "500" could be had with a manual 4 speed trans, or the auto trans. There were 40 426 Hemi/Torque flight cars, and 27 manual trans hemi cars. My Uncle restored a "500" that was originally one of the 27 that were equipped with Hemi,(dual quad carbs) 4 speed and 4.10 gears in the Dana 60. The CHarger "500" didnt perform as well as hoped. Dodge then took a "500" package, and the nose extension, and high mounted spoiler in the rear. And voila you have a Dodge Charger Daytona. The nose produced 1,200 lbs of downforce while the rear spoiler made 600 lbs. The main reason taht the rear spoiler was 23" tall was because if it was shorter the trunch wouldnt open. In 1970 Plymouth released the Superbird. But new NASCAR ruled forced the 5 "Aero" cars to run engines with a 305 cid max. The 5 Aero cars: 1969 Dodge Charger "500" 1969 Dodge CHarger 1970 Plymouth Superbird 1969 Ford Torino Talladega 1969 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II Here is a pic of my Uncles Dodge Charger "500" dual 4bbl 426 cid Hemi, 4 speed manual trans 1 of 27. In fact "500" is a much rarer car than the Dodge Charger Daytona and the Plymouth Superbird ![]() All of the MOPAR "Aero" cars had the stainless steel covers mounted on the outside of the A pillars. Here is a pic of the rear of teh "500" ![]() Compared to the conventional Charger rear deck. ![]() and conventional Charger gaping grille ![]() These Aero cars were the 1st cars in NASCAR to break the 200mph mark. That new Superbird-194mph is interesting for sure Last edited by Hog; 09-26-2014 at 09:15 AM. |

I recall that the Superbirds and Daytonas shredded their tires at top speed due to the downforce generated by the wing.
