Default Re: 1/4 mile times for 90-95 Zs.

I have always done a lift shift 1-2 and power shift 2-3 and with stock gears, run to the end in 3ed, right at red line.

I have tried the power shift 1-2 but do not have the tires for it. it just gets to lose so I lift on the 1-2.

12.89 is pretty damn quick for a bone stock ZR-1, on Gatorbacks.
Chatting with Jim Ingle several years ago when he was inducted into the NCM Hall of Fame, he claimed he had never broken a ZF - amazing coordination. I'd let him drive mine at the drop of a hat.

I'm with Jingles. Say what you want, but that's the best way to do it. I think it's worth a tenth. Some guys can do it, others can't. And practice is a bitch. If you're going to try, freshen up the clutch fluid to make sure that's working perfectly first. LT5's are bulletproof, but ZF6's are not. So be prepared for tranny repair if you keep the gas pedal on the floor.
I'm not claiming to be any good at it, but after a good run at test and tune one night, a ricer kid, (they never seem to power shift), said to me, "hey, I didn't think they made ZR-1 automatics, that's cool". Best compliment ever.

What's an average time for a ZR-1? A complicated question.
ZR-1's come in all states of tune. Consider five distinct categories:

1. Pure stock- Factory original.
Average times- 13.00 or above. With later cars (405hp.) exceptional cars, and exceptional drivers, dipping into the 12.80's

2. Bolt-on cars- Anything you want to do without getting inside the engine.
(I consider exhaust headers and flywheels a bolt-on, some don't).
Average times- (375hp.) 12.00 and above depending on the extent of the mods. Later cars (405hp.) .10 -.20 quicker.

3.Stock block Modified cars- All of the above, plus top-end mods, cams, etc., but with stock block 350c.i. (example- Pete's car).
Average times- 11.50's. Pete's the gold standard here, banging on the tens. What's the quickest yet? 11.06? Most top-end cars without the full range of mods not nearly that quick, in the mid elevens or higher.

4. Naturally Aspirated big displacement cars- All of the above + increased bore and stroke, 368's, 415's, 427's, and beyond.
Average times- All over the place from mid-elevens to low tens., depending on displacement, mods, tires, and driver ability. It takes skill and experience to get the most out of these cars. But if it's not in the mid tens, it's not set up for the quarter mile, or you're not trying very hard.

5. Power adders- All of the above + Turbos, Superchargers, or NOS.
Average times- Turbos are the quickest, in the high nines? What is the best they've turned?

And then there are cars that don't fit into any category. Like Lane Goldstein's retired race car. Turns in the eights with a manual trans, and without power adders. But, with all due respect to Lane, I have a hard time considering a car with a Lenco gear box and a Ford rear end a "real" ZR-1. More of a "funny car" version. Others may differ.
