Smart 'device for data display? How 'bout directly to HUD???
Someone needs to get on this PRONTO. And out of your $million, i want a token cut.
While chattin' up GeekSquad tech today at Best Buy, it dawned on yours truly, that we don't need a display, such as in a smart 'device', that I suggested in the other thread (before stray comments about grocery lists, and dentists' appointment reminders came up); we got HUD for data display!!! I asked him about loading data log software onto any type of 'smart' device, and he said that the same software that runs on your laptops, with USB / ALDL connection, would have a problem with processor architecture of a smart device. He suggested a 'MINI' pc, or an 'htpc' - and yes, when I asked, he DID say, "home theater PC; a display-less device. That's when I thought 'HUD'. So the software CAN go on an Intel or AMD based device, and the display data can go to the projector of an HUD system. Lets pull the projector (or what-so-ever the device is, in HUD), mount it in the Z, and get a data display feed from 'X' device, and have ECM operating parameters in HUD. So where are you thinking of mounting this HUD unit?
What HUD Unit are you thinking of? What is to be shown on the HUD Unit? What exactly will be the benefit of it being on a HUD?

"Smart device" is a large category that includes windows based devices. Porting to these devices is much easier than to others. The same SDKs available for desktops can be used to create or port to any windows device. It's already being done. An aftermarket HUD? They are already out there for ODB II. Here is one on fleabay http://www.ebay.com/itm/ADD-MPH-head...40902324719%26 Putting a front end on it to fool it into thinking an ODB I is an ODB II could be done but not likely since the market is so small. Me? I'm still looking for some fuzzy dice to hang from the mirror that has a GPS built in.

Re: Smart 'device for data display? How 'bout directly to HUD???
I figured it was already in development SOMEwhere, in SOME fashion...
"Putting a front end on it to fool it into thinking an ODB I is an ODB II could be done but not likely since the market is so small." True. But I didn't really have in mind marketing of such configured hardware - rather gleaning input on an idea. Constructive criticism, you might call it. Some wouldn't have any interest, of course. Where to mount the projector? Don't have a clue (don't even have my car right now - it's still in Raleigh , gettin' the tranny swap). Where is it mounted in later model vettes? Which HUD unit? How many are there? What to display? Whatever data is displayed in FreeScan / DataMaster / EFILive / etc. ... Seems that the advantage of HUD would be integration of display, instead of a laptop, or even a mounted [smaller] smart device... Navigating the display, in the absence of a keypad ... |
