I am looking for a little help in using my Tech 1 equipment and was wondering if anyone can assist. I have had my 1990 ZR for nearly 10 years and it has just developed rough running when cold, including a massive bog when accelerating. It is fine when warm. I wish to check for any ECM Trouble codes and am looking for some info on carrying out a straightforward check using the Tech 1.
Please note that I have placed a jumper wire across points A and G of the ALDL connector and have 3 CCM TC's - H72, H74 and H22. I am aware of these and know the reasons why they occurred. Any help with how to use the Tech 1 to interogate the ECM would be much appreciated. Thanks, Richard - 1990 Charcoal and Grey |

take out the jumper from the aldl and plug in the tech1 instead. Try to establish comm with the car. The tech scanner may ask you for the year and engine vin digit ('J' for the LT5).
You can then read codes directly, view realtime parameters, or initiate any number of included diagnostics depending on the cartridge you are using. |

Set up your Tech 1 with one of these cartridges:
GM/Ford/Chrysler Power Train v1.0 GM 81-94 GM 88-91 Body Systems Mass Storage Cartridge Connect the Tech 1 into the ALDL connector and to the cigar lighter for 12 vdc power. Turn the ignition key to the ON position. The Tech 1 should be powered up and ask if you want to do a self test. Next it will display menus to identify the make, year, and engine type of your car. Use the arrow keys on the Tech 1 to make your selections. After the Tech 1 has established communication with your ECM, a list of menu items will allow you to select DISPLAY DTC (or something like that). Use the arrow keys to scroll through all of the DTC's the ECM has stored. Use the Exit Key to return to the Menu Selection screen and select MISC TESTS then select CLEAR DTC (or something like that). This takes you to a screen that allows you to clear the trouble codes. Note, if you have a problem that still exists, the DTC will return when you drive the car. After you have cleared the codes and gotten familiar with the Tech 1, start the car, use the Menu to select DISPLAY DATA and then use the arrow keys scroll through the ECM parameters that you can monitor. Now the fun starts. With an assistant driving, monitor parameters to try to diagnose your performance issues. Good luck, Jim |
