Cruising thru the store today and found some potential new oil for our motors. It's probably not new, but new to me. Real hign in Zinc and Phosphorus which I think is what we need. Check it out and let me know your thoughts. I emailed the same link to Marc H. and will post his reply when I hear from him.

It's good oil. Mobil 1 was supposed to come out with one as well but I have not seen it yet. I think if you use Mobil 1 "High Mileage" you are in great shape unless you are one of the few who cranks up 100-150k on your Z. Even then, I think the wear would be minimal on our non-traditional flat tappets. |

Marc's reply (very quick I might add). They do make a 10/30 also but it doesn't seem readily available in the normal stores. I'll ask when I go again. You can get it at Jeg's and Summit for $4.99 bottle.

A lot of times racing oils won't have the same additives as regular oil. They aren't needed because people don't run the oil in their race cars for a year or 7,500 miles. It is changed all the time.
That seems like a fairly large trade-off to me just to have ZDDP in it. |

Mobil 1 0W40 European Formula has a good amount of Zinc in it and can usually be had for about $5 a qt when on sale.

I belong to several car clubs and we have been getting reports of cam lobe failure in antique to modern motors with flat tappet cams. The cam lobe failure is due to a lot of the Phosphorus and Zinc being removed from motor oil. Some of the oil companies are beginning to come out with the oil formula we had prior to the removal. They are able to put the Phosphorus and Zinc back in because it is for older cars without catalectic converters. Racing and diesel oils should not be used in our motors because they have different additives. You need an additive that includes the right amount of Phosphorus and Zinc to bring motor oil back to the level it was prior to the removal. That way you can use 5-30 weight Mobil 1 or whatever oil you chose. I have been using ZDDPlus and 5-30 Mobil 1 for a year now and have had no problems. Take a look at this web site, it has a lot of good information.

You don't want to put too much zddp in your oil.
For starters, it will take out your catalytic converters and can change oils effectiveness. I just go with Mobil 1 HM which is close enough in specs for me. The v1 has additive packages and is approved for street use. Joe Gibbs also makes a good oil as well. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/atta...duct_guide.pdf Good Read: http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/tech/oil/index.html Last edited by xlr8nflorida; 12-07-2010 at 02:47 PM. |

My buddy runs that oil in his racecar. It was recommended highly by his engine builder and is relatively cheap. He has a 468ci motor and runs this exclusively. He also does monthly oil changes, though.
