Rapid prototyping has been around for at least 15 years. But they could only make things out of plastic. And to do it out of stainless steel takes way to long. There's still no substitute for CNC machines hands down. And guys that can write the cnc programes and make parts like these on the machine can make $100K a year. It takes very skilled people to do it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LCaRqQ8Qf8

That was the first time I'd heard of it. Apparently you can build your own from inkjet printers. I didn't realize you could have moving parts come out of a single printing, though, that is mind-boggling.
Ive seen this process years ago but it was a U.S. automaker.Blew me away then as it does today.

Jay Leno has a 3d printer that will replicate parts.

3d printing has come a long way. look for future products make from powdered carbon fiber, and powdered metal

boeing, lambo, and our callaway buddies have worked pretty extensively with carbon fiber powder

boeing is doing some pretty ambitious projects 3d printing aeroplane wings and parts

look for full car chassis and many parts to become more affordable as the technology matures. saw the robb report with pics of a 3d printed stratovarious violin that played pretty good

this technology has a very bright future and is very exciting, but you still have to do some serious work to digitize and program the part

with the scanning technology and "probing" a part, it's getting easier all the time

anyone know more about this stuff, it's gone beyond the plastics, that's for sure!

This is some really cool stuff! I have a few 53 parts that I may inquire about. Nothing ventured, nothing gained......
