I think the change happened when the cooling pods changed, which my rusty brain thinks was in '90. The '86 cooling pods are hand laid fiberglass that were so "unique" that the underside of the hood reinforcements had to be cut out. A center airduct from a '90 might bolt right on, or the engineers might have just rigged it, knowing it was preproduction. I also think there was a different (deeper) spoiler for a Z51 car.
