Alternator
Need to replace and would like suggestions on what one is the best to use.
Thanks, Ed 94 #389 |
Re: Alternator
Many prefer to have their existing one rebuilt.
It is child's play for the many shops that do them, and this way you know you will end up with the correct pulley, fan, etc. Save some bucks as well, but that is minor compared to not having to remove a replacement because it is incorrect. Good luck, and let us know how you make out! Marty |

Re: Alternator
Remove it and send it to Jerry’s Gaskets for a complete rebuild, instead of a part fix, which is the norm “rebuild” by most vendors.

We also buy original alternator cores. We are saving them up for the day that we have to start rebuilding them ourselves. Hopefully that day never comes:-) The Remy rebuilds are complete rebuilds, no partials. Remy rebuilds typically come with a slightly undersized pulley.. If you prefer to change out the pulleys before sending in your old rebuildable core, that's OK with us. Just make sure you transfer all of the spacers, in order, along with the pulley & put the removed pulley onto the core alternator. We have a job order in que with a machine shop to make new ZR-1 specific alternator pulleys. |

We do the same, and spork is correct, far more consistent!. Rarely ever a problem. Marty |
Re: Alternator
I chose to have mine rebuilt. Did not have to worry about wrong amperage and wrong pulley. Our z's have a larger diameter pulley.

Re: Alternator
Rockauto has a Delco for less that $100.00. I got one about a month ago, and it's working fine so far. Correct pulley, plug and play.
Now I can get the original rebuilt anytime, and have a spare. |
Re: Alternator
Buy Jerry's.... You'll waste time/money everywhere else. If you send your original in, keep the original pulley. Jerry's comes with a smaller pulley, if you spend a lot of time near the rev-limiter it could lead to Alternator SIDS.
I pull the upper plenum and the alt can be done in 45-mins. Good time to wire the secondaries open as well :) |
Re: Alternator
Easier just to pull the air horn.

Re: Alternator
I have twice now replaced alternator. I removed throttle body. Did not have to remove oil sender or tensioner. First time I had unit "rebuilt" last November. Replaced it with one of Jerry's on MR6 two days ago. Thank you Jim Voter! However I believe the easiest would be to lift plenum. As long as you have gaskets.

Ah, yes. Throttle body remove would make it so you wouldn't have to remove the oil sender. Probably makes it easier to access behind the alternator for (+) terminal too. Many ways to skin this one ;) |
Re: Alternator
We did it in 2 hours in parking lot with just the minimum of correct tools.
