Mercury Marine builds DOHC LSx motor

This is just too good. I know an LS motor will fit in a C4.

Rick,

The LS architecture was the response GM Powertrain put together after they were shamed into it w the intro of the LT-5. The approach here mimics the original concept of adapting DOHC cylinder heads to the SBC except that the LSx block is a more modern design AND aluminum.

this engine or this adaptation will probably be expensive. Almost anything dohc will cost money. If I had catastrophic engine failure and I could not find another lt5 I would go straight to a big block conversion with nitrous.

Whaaaaaat?

I am so excited about this!=D>=D>=D>=D>=D>=D>

If I ever blow up my LT5 I am installing this..... 427 with DOHC heads. Sign me up.

Find an 84 Z-51, and do an LSx transplant w these heads, Dana44 and ZF-6.

That engine looks pretty wide, not sure it would fit anything but a C4 or larger vehicle.

I wuz lookin' at that too. However, as a retro the engine wouldn't have to fit up through the frame rails as they had to when the cars were on the assembly line.

GM Powertrain seem to have been busting their collective humps to avoid the obvious; the performance advantage of the DOHC architecture. MM was, I thought, being a little vague when asked about a small block version of their quad-valve DOHC beast; during our factory tour a couple months back. I guess we know why! It may take a little while to sort it out, but if it performs, as I'm sure it will, it will be a (pushrod) killer!

Can't wait to see the numbers!!

unless they can get the volume up it will be a bit cost prohibitive

but that never stopped me before

I gave my builder an unlimited budget, and to my surprise he exceeded it!!

ROn,

Don't forget MM is used to dealing in much smaller numbers than GM. Everybody else is pedaling the same kind of cylinder head for the LSx. Here comes MMR really changing the game. BE interesting to get volume # for vendors like TFS, AFR, Edelbrock etc.

As said when the LT5 was being developed; 'MM is experienced at building engines that run at full throttle most of the time, whereas most car engines do not. That is an important distinction!'

It will be interesting to see some numbers - numbers that include $$ too.

Wow - a new modern heart for the BEAST!!!

It could make a nice speedboat motor as well.
