Which coil pack do you have?

Doing intel for my upcoming fuel injector change. Figure I'll change the coil packs while I'm under there so I can leave the plenum on for a while. I've found 3 types of coil packs
AC Delco p/n 10467067- $41.09ea
Accel p/n 140017- $43.95
MSD Ignition 8226- $44.95
The AC delco are direct replacements I assume. My questions are these:
Which type of coil packs do you have? If it's not AC Delco, what are the advantages of using another type, (if any)? ie. MSD last longer or work better. Is there any other manufacturers besides the 3 I listed?

Re: Which coil pack do you have?

I pulled the plenum off after work today (someone before me broke the connector clips off almost every electrical connector - two outside the plenum and two underneath ... good grief :-x)

Anyway, I purchased AC Delcos. I bought them from Amazon for about $34 each. I figure that at 22 years, it's probably cheap insurance.

Can't tell much difference from the stock coils but like the red color.

Re: Which coil pack do you have?

Had an original coil go bad a couple years back, knowing I had to pull plenum I decided to put a better performance coil so I changed them all to Accels.

There's a small tab that has to be removed so they can mount next to each other, easily removed with a hacksaw blade in seconds. Didn't notice much difference than stock coil just hope they last longer...jim

Thanks guys:cheers:. I can't seem to find a p/n for the Screamin demon or the Borg Warner that fits our cars . Most of the sites don't give a sub-model for the Corvette.

Re: Which coil pack do you have?

I had originally changed out my OE coils for Jegs coils when I did my injector replacement. Subsequently I changed out the Jegs coils, after 3 yrs, for GM coils. The GM coils have been in there for about 32k miles and seem to be just fine. I didn't see any evident difference between the two brands by looking at my plugs, AC 41-602's, which I change every year.

The reason for going back to the GM coils was that they are specifically for an LT5, or so GM says; where the Jegs coils had other applications besides an LT5. I figure the environment in the valley of an LT5, for the coils, is fairly harsh temperature wise.:dontknow:

Working on a Z now that has Screamin Demon coils and nology wires (really different looking wires).

Good point. I wonder how much testing went into the non-OE coils, being used on the LT-5, other than our members here. From what I've read it gets PD hot under there.

I've had the same set of MSD coils and wires for the last 3+ years. Also used MSD coil and wires on my 84 HEI system together w the MSD 6A box.
The 6A finally died after 10 years.

Re: Which coil pack do you have?

A very timely question for me. A month ago I installed 4 new MSD coils and got 8 misfiring plugs. A switch back to OE Delco works fine. The MSD were made in.....China (No!!!!). Advice to myself: dont swap for the sake of 'not having to go under there again' (you will regardless and get used to it) and if you have a problem with coils, use OE parts.

Coils, wires, or both? I don't have it back together so it would be easy to pop a few pictures.

I wish I could give a better thought process or some testing evidence that supports my thought Joe, but I don't have anything. All I know is that GM listed two P/N's of coils like our coils. One P/N is for an LT5 motor and the other P/N is for other GM applications. Now this was like back in 07 or maybe 08, and I don't know what they list now. We all know how long it takes for an LT5 to get stone cold after reaching normal operating temps, so I just chickened out with the Jegs coils! LOL Besides the spark plugs told me nothing by just looking at the tips, and I didn't cut them.:o But still I saw no difference, and I just threw out plugs going back to 06. The only modification or liberty I took with ignition parts was a set of Magnacore 10mm wires specifically for an LT5.

Thanks for the pic. They are some big ole wires aren't they? They look twice as thick. I take it you and Daniel are working on this change together. Any other pics or p/n #'s for coils, wires, and plugs that you Daniel have is always appreciated. Thanks, guys:cheers:

Nology Hot Wires

It would be valuable to have a before and after dyno comparison with just the wires swapped.

Re: Which coil pack do you have?

I looked into Nology. Just one of those cables cost $314.13. Unless in the quantity column 1 means 1 set, not 1 wire. They also have Carbon fiber wrapped cables. $314.13 seems reasonable for a complete set. $2513.04, not so much, lol. They claim a 300x more powerful spark. At that much more, you think it would be arc-welding the interior of the engine, lol. They also claim more HP, might be worth it.

Vilant,

Yes, they are very big wires. The Screamin Demon Coils and Nology Wires were bought and installed in 06/2000 by previous owner, I just looked through my 3 inch thick folder of receipts. Yes, they are $300ish a set. We have already reinstalled the plenum but I will remove it again to take a few pics, easy to pull plenum without coolant in yet.

I have known Daniel since high school and this being my first vette he has been helping me out. I picked up this Z in April of this year and have really been enjoying her. Daniel has a lot more experience with vettes but we are learning on the ZR-1s together.

Scott,

Like I stated above the previous owner installed coils and Nology wires, so I am not to sure about the performance claims. It would be cool to see differences with just wires swapped.

Re: Which coil pack do you have?

I've always been skeptical of Nology's strategy of more spark energy at any cost as it must seriously shorten the life of the coil. maybe for very high compression or FI applications, but I figure if you can make 500 hp on a stock system, no reason to mess with it.

Use OE coils. Did the swap a few weeks ago and am very happy.

You sure about that? I just searched Amazon, the only coil packs they have for the ZR-1 are made by United Tech. They do have AC Delco but not for our cars, unless you got the last ones.

Re: Which coil pack do you have?

Well it looks like A/C Delco is the winner. I don't know if there's any added benefit by using Accel or MSD (there may be, but no one posted it), but they are more expensive. Just purchased 4 new OEM A/C Delco for 34.99 ea. from White Racing. Also purchased new Delphi injectors from FIC, and new wires and gaskets from Jerry's. I'll grab the plugs from Autozone or Pepboys. Might as well support our sponsors right.

Looks like the plemum has to come back off anyhow... I left a beer bottle under it :eusa_shhh BTW what was the plenum torque again? 89 ft-lb right? Ill make sure and put plenty of red thread lock on those :blahblah:

If you did the pull the plenum, and have the pics, I'm still interested in seeing them, even though I bought the AC Delco's. I also quickly bought everything, once I got approval, in case my wife changed her mind;). I originally wasn't planning on getting everything until at least Nov..

About fifteen years ago I had a coil go out. I replaced them all with Screamin' Demons, and MSD 8mm wires. They've been working fine ever since.

Q. - Is "Screamin' Demon" actually a separate make, or just marketed under that name?

Yes I know. I should have searched before creating a new thread. Was kind of tilted last night, that's why.

I'm sorry.

However, some people say MSD 8226, others say 8224. Which ones are the good ones?

Feel free to delete my thread.
