Next Performance Modification, 90 ZR!
Hi all,
I would like opinions on my next bang for the buck (without breaking the bank ) I should look into? My 1990 ZR1 has the following modifications: Fitted with Watson headers & ceramic coated, mated to a B&B 3" Exhaust. Idles nice and quite, with excellent oil pressure & zero noises. Good power, estimated @ just over 400 crank due to the headers and custom chip calibration. Drive train DANA 44 equipped with 3:92 gears. I do not want to do any head work. I know I am comparing two very different cars, but on my 86 Grand National, cold air induction really helped. I do not want to cut the front license plate area to induct cold air into the engine. Please give me any thoughts you all have? Thanks, Jeff 90 ZR1 |

Re: Next Performance Modification, 90 ZR!
Port the intake plenum and injector housings. You can keep the heads stock and add ~25-30hp on a '90.
The other "easy" power gain seems to be the Fidanza flywheel. Since it's rotating mass, the gain varies as engine acceleration changes (i.e. less in each subsequent gear). The stock intake pretty much pulls cold air already. And as you see, the filter is huge. You can open the lid on the filter up, though don't expect huge (or even measurable?) power gains.

Do you know anyone close to central NC that can do that work. Is it difficult to remove the intake and injector housing. Same with the Fidanza flywheel. Aprox. how much $$$ would I be lookind at. Thanks again, Jeff 90 ZR1 |

Re: Next Performance Modification, 90 ZR!
Well you could go to an open air element that replaces the stock lid with the K&N filter setup. And a set of Haibecks anti collapse hoops which keeps the TB accordian open under WOT. The open air element kit replaces the stock air filter lid and they are available in both plastic and metal. I suggest metal or as some folks have done they have simply cut out their stock lid themselves. It will improve air flow and will insure the most available air flow or you could go to the claw three filter setup that a few members have. Just a few ideas beyond porting and polishing the top end (Plenium, Air horn, Injector housings)

Thanks a lot for your reply! I like the Anti Collapse hoops idea, that seems like a good logical fix I have not seen the open lids, perhaps you or someone can chime in... Thanks again for your reply, Jeff 90 ZR1 |

Re: Next Performance Modification, 90 ZR!
I have a set of IHs almost complete(porting), removing plenum is not bad if you are a decent wrench. I could port your plenum in about 2 weeks.......looking for $700 w/exchange of your IHs.
Let me know if you are interested.

Re: Next Performance Modification, 90 ZR!
Anyone else have opinion on Fidanza with 3.92s? I would think the combo would present a real problem for traction but I am curious to hear of any experience.

You may want to get familiar with removing the plenum anyway. It isn't hard to do, and is a necessity for some common issues and maintenance. The flywheel, well any place you'd take your car to for a new clutch should probably be able to handle that. There is some trade-off associated with the flywheel. The car has a heavy dual-mass for a reason, the gearbox can make some pretty unpleasant noises when the dual-mass is removed. It sounds like someone threw some rocks in there when in neutral.
