Default Haibeck chip

I posted this up on the corvette forums but thought I'd repost here.

All I can say is, I wish I hadn't waited so long to get the chip. The Z has never run so good. The idle has smoothed out, the backfire is gone, and it just feels stronger overall. I didn't get on it too hard because I still need to replace the radiator but it feels amazing.

Mad props to Mark and the crew. Anyone running the stock chip I can't say enough about how much better the car runs with the Haibeck setup.

Glad to hear your good report. Yeah, I think that's going to be my next purchase. Got the high idle coming to a traffic light then it settles down about 5 sec after I come to a stop. That stock chip has to go!

I've held off on the chip because I've tried Hypertech on my Camaro and the power programmer on my truck and never noticed a difference. But the Haibeck chip in my Z is like night and day. I can't say I've noticed a power increase but the overall driveability is amazing. I've got an early run 1990 (#224). I don't know if later year Z's will have the same improvement but it's the best 300 bucks I've spent on the car yet.

Good to hear! I have one of his chips in an envelop, waiting for me to finish my porting chores. I opted for removing the secondary butterflies and going on "all 16". In addition, the fans are to come on sooner, the idle is suppose to be "fixed", spark is advanced some, no backfire (with headers), and more. So, your report is received well here too!

mark does nice work, the only thing i found on the dyno on both cars which corey did , was the spark advance in both the haibeck , and callaway chip, we had to back off the advance and the total, might be most likely due to ca 91 fuel, dont get me wrong i am in no way knocking him he is one of the most knowledgable tuners we have and does a great job.

Sorry to be asking what maybe an obvious Q about buying a "chip", but do you have to send a "core" in to buy a chip?

TIA
Tom

No. Though those flashable PROM's can't be cheap, so you could probably talk to him about flashing one you sent him to save a few bucks? If you have the GM cal, though, that may be something you want to keep just in case.

Thanks Bob. I have two OEM PROM's, the original AUAH(?) code and the updated ABYK(?). When I asked Mr. Haibeck about getting a "new" program he explained that the updated AYBK was the better base programing to do a re-write on. I tried to buy another to send him, but the 90 prom's are NLA now.

Ofcourse, I may have not entirely grasped what Mr. Haibeck was trying to tell me about "buying" a "new chip"......but I'm pretty sure that I had to send in one of mine and that he preferred the updated version. I had wanted to keep a stock PROM as a fall back for emissions testing.

This stuff seems to be just beyond my ability to understand it. I'm guessing what I do not grasp is that the OEM programming is copy-righted and no one has a copy of the software because you have to buy it. To get a "new" chip, a programmer has to start with the OE program and just modify some lines of code, not rewrite the entire software package? kind of like playing with your memory clocking in the BIOS on your MOBO.

Thanks for you trying to set me straight. I do appreciate it!

You get 50 bucks off if you send one to him. I held on to mine because I like to keep the stock pieces just in case someone wants them someday.
