Does anyone make a custom length c-beam? Can the original be shortened with good results?

I wouldn"t know why not. Offhand, I would say the best way would be to remove a piece from the middle somewhere, keeping the ends in the same alignment. Obviously, welding the beam back together properly is essential. You may consider adding a "fish plate" to the area you sectioned.
