Ok I'm looking for thoughts on why to or why not to change color of my red 90 ZR-1 to competition Yellow. I have always wanted a comp yellow 90 Z but with probably 18-20 left out in North America I don't like my chanches any time soon of finding one. I've made my plus and minus list, what thoughts can you add to it?
Plus My car is near perfect, even if I find a yellow it may not be as nice of a car Cost to paint plus cost of my car most likely will be less than what I would pay for a nice Yellow car Lot's of red cars out there and the car will be done properly so if I decide to sell I question if this would hurt the value of the car. I dont see the value of our cars going crazy any time soon Minus I hate to trash the flawless original paint Car will no longer be as manufactured |

What color is the interior of the Red 1990?
How many miles on your 1990? Any modifications of the 1990? I would advertise for a Yellow ZR-1.....I see you already did that once in July 2016 with no responses.... I would advertise for a yellow 1990 ZR-1 again a few times........not just one time. You never know.....someone may let one go in a trade or outright if the price or trade is right. You say you want a yellow 1990 ZR-1......I assume that means you do NOT want a 1991-1995 Yellow ZR-1? The numbers go from 20s to almost 200. If you do decide to re-paint......document the costs, preparation and painting in a new thread for us ![]()

If you do it "right" as you say, it likely won't hurt the value. Could even increase it. Unless it's a garage queen with 100 miles on it, originality doesn't matter to anybody on a C4. But doing it "right" will involve massive disassembly and would likely cost $10K, maybe more. Half the value of the car to change paint from an already desirable color? I get why you want yellow, but...

I shared my color change experience via PM. My choice was much easier because my car had already gone through a color change (from turquoise to black), and the black was pretty scratched up.
I had been watching for yellow C4's before I bought mine and they don't come up very often. My paint job cost $4,000, but I would expect to have to pay $5k or more. I certainly understand the strong desire to have a car in a special color, especially yellow! I also understand hesitating to change a car that currently has very good paint. Tough decision, but I say go for it! :-) |

Changing the color on a C-4 today may seem like no big deal.
Certainly it's your car, and you may do as you please and desire. I will simply say that C-2's with a color change lose about 25% of their value in driver quality condition, and 50% or more if show quality. C-3's with similar changes are a bit lower, but not by much. C-4's are still so low in their value cycle, that today it is no big deal, but that will change as the car ages. While selling your car is likely one of the farthest thoughts on your mind, just know that you will be making it difficult to sell at anywhere near the price of an original car. The first question I am asked on most any car is always is it numbers matching, with the second being does it match the paint and trim codes. While I am sure it may not matter to some, it matters to those who search for higher end examples. Good luck with you decision! ![]() Marty |

Thanks all!
No mods bone stock Just under 18k miles Grey interior. Yeah I know not the best combo for resale but I love it I am Specifically looking for a 90 I just like the earlier nose and black belt line and don't like later car seats so I'm shoe horned back into the 20 some available I'll do all tear down so I will be in the 8k for paint and have 20 in the car so all in I think pretty solidly under what I would pay for original yellow |

18k?
Don't do it! As mentioned earlier, you can advertise LOTS more and keep you eyes open. Can can call people with yellow cars and try to strike a deal. Plus, IMHO yellow and gray will look goofy.

Yeah, I think I'll retract my "Go for it" advice. I didn't realize your car's mileage was so low.
I like Bill's advice to contact yellow car owners and negotiate a deal. Use that $8K you were going to spend on the new paint towards your negotiating. Good luck! |
