Keith...this is exactly what we work on doing....I am working on doing this for the Joint Strike Fighter. We do it using something called Differential GPS...in a nutshell we take the GPS info from the ship and uplink it to the aircraft to provide a GPS "difference" if you will, between the ship and the aircraft...this gives us the ability to calculate precise position of the aircraft and the ship and how to guide the aircraft to the precision approach "decision height"...eventually we will have an "Autoland" capability where the pilot is "hands off"...and our system will guide the aircraft onto the deck. Very cool stuff.
