The Phoenix returns to the scene of her greatest episode today to soar again!
Good luck to all running today, and hope to see as many as possible out there to support fellow ZR-1'ers! ![]() Last edited by Paul Workman; 06-23-2014 at 11:53 AM. |

Great fun...Best part? I DIDN'T BREAK NUTTIN!!!
![]() Just 4 ZR-1s came to play yesterday: Al was the big dawg with his 441 beast, Bob Banks, Dominic, and me. Weather was perfect, except it got into the mid 80s w/ some humidity vs. last year's overcast and in the 50s. Honestly, after all the work getting her repaired and painted, I was had a little anxiety in the pit of my stomach as I intentionally lined up in that same infamous lane that was so disastrous last year. At the light I made a vigorous start but I let up to make an exploratory/shake-down pass: be damn sure I knew where the finish line was - driving toward the early morning sun, as it were, finishing at a mild 133.x mph. On my second run I was paired up with Bob. Our motors were about even, power wise (510 ish) but he was rowing with 4.10s and mine was the stock 3.45s. On the heals of that recent forum thread discussion about rear gears and which had the advantage in what circumstances, I was eager to see how the two cars would perform. Quick on the draw, Bob got a couple car lengths on me at the line. And he got another length by the time I shifted into 2nd. That 4.10 gear was workin' for him, no doubt! But, at the big end, I was still in 4th and Bob had shifted to 5th and the gap was shrinking - pretty much exactly as expected. Bob did cross the finish line ahead of me at (I think he said) 138(?) mph, where the Phoenix turned in my best at 144.23 mph. One pass does not a trend make, but as I said, it was interesting to compare two cars with reasonably close setup except for rear gearing. Oh...and those Hawk HPS pads worked great - especially if applied! ![]() Temperatures were on the rise by mid morning, and I felt I turned in a good pass. AND! Nothing broken - so good 'nuff!! Dom sprung an oil leak, somewhere in the vicinity of the oil filter/cooler region and had to pull out of the racing after only one shake-down pass. Hope he lets us know what it was. That left Al and his 441 BEAST! ![]() On every pass that I saw him make, that monster was having problems getting hooked well into 3rd gear, and still turned in a 159.xx mph. There was a suspected problem with the track's equipment, but Bob and I had to leave before seeing Al try once again to break into the 160s! Hope he made it! Maybe he'll chime in?? All in all it was a fun time. It was an opportunity to see what difference the winter mods made to last year's runs. I still have the stock TB bores and had hoped I could get it to 63mm and get those restrictive Magnaflow muffs replaced with the Dynamax 17228s before this run. Well, maybe by next time? One of "THEM"!: ![]() As it happened, I ran into a "Joe" feller from the FBI's nemesis the "Fast Glass" Chicago Corvette car club. He came over to gaze at the LT5 and remarked how well "those cars run!" He went on to say that "a group of those guys beat us again last fall at the (Crown Point Corvette Club) 1/4 mile shootout" and an instant later saw the ZR-1 NetRegistry embroidery on the shirt I was wearing, and his expression told that he realized I was part of that club. "Are you...?" he stammered. I told him I was, but the real damage at those events wasn't done by my car, but 'a few like that one over there', pointing to Al's white rocket. He remembered at last year's 1/2 mile run a certain red ZR-1 running off the end of the track. It was my turn to be humble... ![]() We did see Robert DeMarco and his Amy there, and a host of his other beautiful family members there. Got to see the little grandson "Tony" again (who rode "shotgun" with Robert during the Mountain Run and some more of you met at the BG gathering). It was great fun, and a chance for a few of the FBI warriors to gather to spread their wings a bit more! But, as last year showed, far as forced induction goes..."IF YOU AIN'T BLOWIN, YOU AIN'T GOIN!!" The forced induction guys showed the way home again. Sure wish Marc could have been there. Would love to see how his ZR1 would have run! Last edited by Paul Workman; 06-23-2014 at 07:35 AM. |

I have a couple of Al's runs on vid that will be posting shortly. As Paul said, I never made a second run. Mustang driver behind me spotted oil puddle as I moved the car up after first run. We're pretty sure that it's the oil sensor in that god forsaken spot that no human can reach. We checked oil level and Bob Banks was good enough to give me a quart to top things off for the ride home. Other than a bit of smoke, it looks like no harm done. When I got my time slip, I thought I had done a 135. Wasn't until I got home that I read it more carefully and realized I had run a 141 out of the box. Over-revved it in 3rd hitting the fuel cutoff before I shifted it. So probably lost some momentum there.
Some of you may know Matt Farah from Smoking Tire. He was announcing the races. When Al's car was headed down the track Farah said how much he liked the ZR-1 and that Al's car was one strong C4. But he also mistakenly said the motor was developed by Mercury Marine. Looks like the fastest NA was a Vengence Racing C5Z @171. A Viper and GTR TIED FOR TOP DOG yesterday @213. Let's face it, these are not cars your driving to Home Depot to pick up a bag of mulch. Weather conditions were good but humid especially in the first runs. Fog earlier in the morning which burned off later on so MPH got better. Probably some better traction also with warmer track surface. Come on Frank, bring that baby over in October. |
