Clutch Zip
Hello all,
come to bask in your great knowledge: My z has 18,700 miles. 3rd owner so I know some but not all of its history/mods/changes. Overall condition is 9+. I say all that because it doesn't appear this car has been abused, raced hard, etc. I enjoy spirited driving but am generally easy on vehicles. My question: I drive in frequent stop-and-go traffic. In the last week or so when I press in the clutch to shift. I get an occasional sound that is clearly coming from the clutch/flywheel/pressure plate assembly. Best way I can describe it is like a ZZIIIIPPPP sound; a louder version of zipping up a jacket. The gearbox feels fine. No grinding gears or reluctance to go into gear I am used to feeling if the clutch was actually going out. and I cant replicate it with precision; it happens sporadically. I checked the slave cylinder reservoir and top it off a bit but it wasn't below the Min mark. I do remember a Service Bulletin about some "button" on the back of the crankshaft and it sticking out to far or something. Looking for it now. Is that what I am hearing or is this a larger issue? I am presuming the clutch/flywheel/pressure plate are all the original components. any thoughts would be much appreciated. |

I had an odd noise and high clutch release on my 92 right before the throwout bearing let loose

Hard to say w/o opening it up. But, just trying to imagine what would make a "zipping" sound - the fingers of the pressure plate that contact the throwout bearing coming in contact with a stationary piece of the clutch assembly might make a zipping sound. In any case, "that ain't raht"!
Any reason forcing me to open the clutch housing is reason enough to R&R everything while I'm "in there".

Hi,
My clutch was making a strange sound after a lot of stop and go use in traffic. I bled out all of the old clutch fluid and put in new fluid (Not just topped off) and it is quiet now. Maybe try something easy first? Good luck. Bill

Hello everyone. 1st off let me say a HUGE THANKS to Bill Boureau and Jim Jandik. Both very friendly and helpful people, even to a complete stranger. They are true fans of the ZR1 and CR Corvettes in general and are invaluable in helping us all keep these cars on the road in the absence of GM/part supplier support.
Urge anyone needed anything clutch/transmission related to be customers of their companies: Bill - ZFDOC.COM / Jim - POWERTORQUESYSTEMS.COM. What initially was thought as the pivot stud backing out causing the clutch fork to rub against the pressure plate ended up being a failed pilot BUSHING which was odd as everyone I have spoken to so far said they didn't know there was a bushing, they had only seen pilot bearings. hoping to have the car back together this weekend and back on the road. Thank you as always to this community and those connected to it who are generous with their time, knowledge and advice. In some small way its the only way we will keep us all on the road and I, for one, thankful for their dedication and participation. |

The stocker is a brass bushing I believe....be careful if you buy a replacement bushing; some are steel.....I got a steel one and in a short time it adhered to the crank. Had to cut it out with a grinder
