weighed my 91 on a certified truck scale
3410 lbs with an estimated 5-6 gallons of gas and about 10 lbs of junk in the car that I didn't bother to take out.
I would guess that the dry weight would be closer to 3370 lbs. I do have headers which weigh a bit less, but I'm still running cats and all the air injection stuff. Another not stock item are the C5 front brakes which weigh more and I converted to a GTO spare tire for those. For the most part I consider my car a full weight example of the model. I have heard various things about truck scales, but the certified ones are supposed to be quite accurate and the weights are given in 10 lb increments. |

My '90 is complete stock. When the car was immatriculated here in
Switzerland it was weighed on an offical calibrated scale. The fuel tank had to be filled completly. Weight is 1580 kg what means 3480 lbs. Franz

I'm curious what my 90 weighs. I am minus A/C, A/C Condensor, secondary's, Cats but have bigger rad, roll bar, trans & diff coolers.

Re: weighed my 91 on a certified truck scale
I'd be interested to see what Pete's car weighs. Pete has put that car on quite a diet over the years. Maybe we should start a "Pete Pool"???
The weight thing is pretty interesting. Marc has an article on his web site detailing weight items. Case in point: I just received a tilt steering wheel for Ami's 69 C3 Vette. I was horrified at what it weighs - must be 35-40#!! I'm sure that tile wheel was adapted, if not outright used "as is" in other GM cars where weight was not a primary consideration. Makes me want to focus on what other common parts are slapped onto the C4 that weren't designed specifically for the Vette, i.e., w/o any particular weight consequence in mind... e.g.,

Re: weighed my 91 on a certified truck scale
What would be an interesting "project" for maybe a newsletter is that all six model years in "stock" form be scaled "as equipped" from GM with X gallons of fuel. If a car was a "2 topper" it would be noted as such and if not which was included. There's always been a lot of conjecture regarding weights of C4's and people always have BUT this and BUT THAT comments.
There's "CAT Certified" scales everywhere and they could all be done on the same +/- certifications. http://catscale.com/cat-scale-locator After establishing a "known" set of values, comparisons vs. those could be volunteered also and the modifications "noted". I'd think the base needs established first though. There certainly should be enough "as equipped" out there to establish the base information I'd think. Re: weighed my 91 on a certified truck scale
I was curious about the weight of my '91 L98 coupe. It is in some way the
"same" car as the ZR-1. I say "same" because it has all the options as six speed, sport seats, power seats, FX3, UJ6, stereo with CD. This Corvette was on the same scale, same conditions. The weight of this car is 1510 kg or 3325 lbs. Difference is 70 kg or about 155 lbs. I was surprised that the difference isn't more.

Re: weighed my 91 on a certified truck scale
The L98 was weighed with one top, with the original not transparent one.
There was only just this one. I don't know whether the ZR-1 was weighed with both tops, but I think just with one, because the officials wanted to have everything that was not absolutely necessary for the car out of it.

Re: weighed my 91 on a certified truck scale
This scale is really close by and I never new we had one in the area (at a moving and storage company). I found out about it recently due to an interesting situation on an older pickup truck I bought from out of state that I had to register. CA has a weight tax on 1/2 tons now - long story- I was exploiting a loophole for a permanently mounted camper, but found out if you weigh out at 3999 lbs or less, the tax is $24 or less on a sliding scale. more than that and it's a big jump up.
Since it is a swb reg cab 2wd, I stripped the camper, bedmat, drove out both tanks to pretty much fumes and weighed in at 3920 lbs for a yearly tax of only $22. Driving without the camper is a fine north of $500 so I didn't really want to go there, but if I didn't weigh right, the tow bar and spare tire were coming off. The scale is a big cement pad, but i don't know what type of technology is used. |
