Congrats, Rich!
I know what a weight off your shoulders this is.
Can you tell us what the requirements were and
what your car "blew"? Was this idle and under
load (rollers) also visual check? Just comparing to CA.
Thanks,
Ted

PS: The requirements are tougher now than when the Z
was brand new. And per my tester, the Z's requirements
are tougher than those for brand new cars.

its BS.

PSS: I also remember Locobob telling us Washington or Oregon
also has a decibel test! Again, its BS.

Ted,
Yes, they have a visual test to ensure air tubes and such are present. The test is on rollers under load, at 15 MPH and 25 MPH.

15 MPH
HC ppm 48, reading was 15
CO % 0.19 reading was 0.00
NO ppm 632 reading was 531

25 MPH
HC ppm 53 reading was 15
CO % 0.28 reading was 0.01
NO ppm 614 reading was 612

Rich

That Nox would have failed the CA enhanced test regions (zip codes in the larger cities).

Needs to be just under 500 ppm.

Wow, and your car blew a 15 HC!
Drool, Drool.
That's were mine had probs. Mine
blew about 40, max CA was 35 I think.
New cars couldn't make 35: that's how CA
is trying to get "old" cars off the road.
Did you add any fuel additives? Custom Chip?]

No, put my stock chip back in, no fuel additives, that was going to be my next trick but wanted to see if it would pass on it's own and it did, just barely on NO reading. Since my plenum has been ported, I figured with the stock chip, I would be running lean to start with.

Apparently VA and CA are similar in the hardware used for testing but the difference comes in the max limits of various pollutants.

For LT5s, the real problem is Nox. Unless the engine's cam profiles or cam timing has been altered such that there is misfire at low engine speeds, other pollutants are usually not a problem.

Nox however, can be troublesom, especially with the 90-92 engines which do not have EGR. The 93-95 engines, with EGR, can be recalibrated to turn the EGR on at a lower speed such that the 15 mph is nearly as clean as the 25 mph.

Congratulations Rich. I know that you put a lot of thought and effort into preparing your ZR-1 for the test.

Well done.
